GTA3 crashing, getting really pissed off...

Gah, i'm so sick of it!!! Every time i play the GTA3 port for windows, it starts out okay, but it soon hangs, and only cutting the power and rebooting will stop it. It will hang at random, although it seems to prefer doing it when something blows up.

I have the liberty city mod for vice city, which is much more stable and looks better, but the problem with that is that none of the GTA3 missions are available in that mod, so all you can do with that is explore.

Is there any way to solve this crashing problem, like a patch or something?

Here are my specs, which are more than sufficient for a game this old;

Athlon 3000 2.15 GHZ
512 MB ram
160 GB HD
Via unichrome chipset (its a piece of s*** 3d accelerator with horrible drivers, but I doubt that that's the problem, as people with newer nvidias and radeons have had it crash too from what I've heard.)

anyone?

Just a bad engine. Sucks. It's never given me a problem, but still a bad engine. :\

That's something I don't get though, VC is still the same engine, only its slightly upgraded and it has new vehicles.

However, its infinitely more stable. I can play VC all day if I wanted to and get no problems.

And yes, that driving on water effect is annoying as hell. I like to haul a** in the game (stupid laws won't let me drive full throttle IRL, so i compensate by unleashing herll on the poor denizens of liberty and vice cities. ) and the engine can't catch up with me. To fix the draw distance thing you have to turn on the frame limiter (Or run in win98 compatibility mode).
