The Stalker series is a pair (Soon the be a trio- more on that later) of survival-horror games that I, and many others, find to be epic masterpieces... If you take the time to make them work that is.

Stalker: Shadow Of Chernobyl was released in 2007 by GSC after a long time in development hell, when it was released the players got hit in the face with relentless bugs and broken gameplay, however the bugs have been patched and mods have truly brought out this games potential. The game uses the X-Ray engine which is something you have to see to believe. Well Valve is mucking around making flashlights independant light sources, X-ray has a full lighting system- every single light emiting object will cast it's own shadows. This is used to spectacular effect with the Day/Night and weather cycle of the game. If you played it before and thought it was bad, now is the perfect time to try again. A mod of note would be this: Stalker Complete 2009 which makes the game look better, play better and work better. If you have the time it's worth it to merge this mod with Arsenal mod- which adds 180 new weapons to the game. Of course you need to understand alot of the games workings to get this to work.

Trailer

Stalker: Clear Sky is the second game in the series, and bills itself as a stand alone prequel to the original. Clear Sky uses an enhanced version of the engine. Supporting DX10 effects and generally being smoother, or it would if the mapping and AI weren't so shoddy. At release this game was covered in even more bugs then the original, as such most modders have strayed away from this one and it has, for the most part, died off as far as major modding is concerned. I personally think it is a good game with loads of potential, but i can see why some people hate it.

Trailers

Stalker: Call of Pripyet is the third in this series, and is a direct sequel to the events in SHOC, Not much is known about it other then the fact that new locations are going to be much larger, it uses a newer version of the engine, and they have a new test team (THANK GOD).

Other Notes
It really stands for "Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, Robber" But really it just sounds cool
Yes, Steam version of SHOC has no MP, but the MP isn't that great anyway.

STALKER is henceforth to be used in replacement of the now outdated word "Awesome"

DARWIN WILL PREVENT THE DOWNFALL OF OUR RACE. - Rob

Does the OP look broken to anyone else? All my code seems to be fine.

Looks fine to me, except the youtube videos are white boxes.

I hate those games. A shame that I stopped playing Jade Empire in spring 2007 just to play the first game, didn't realize how much it sucked until... well, now.

Those mods look impressive, though.

Exactly, this is why when people ask me to rate Stalker I always give it a 5. The only reason I like it is because I saw the potential and spent 2 weeks working on a modpack. Any game you have to work on before it's fun isn't a good game.

I loved STALKER, and I'm enjoying Clear Sky as well. :colbert:

I liked stalker a lot, never got the second game. I was really confused about what SHOC was, until I realized you just didn't type S:SoC correctly.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

I love it too, I did just make a thread trying to sell the game.
The shootout in the NPP is one of the most intense things I have ever played. From the time I entered Pripyet to the time I left it again (After killing atleast 400 monolith guys in the reactor) I was on the edge of my seat.

:Edit:
That's what the community calls it, I know it's wrong but W/E.

Well, considering that's what GSC called it in the file structure...

Heh, that's not the only thing wrong. "Neutral" in all the config files is "Neytral" among other mistakes.
Sure makes modding a hassle when you have to make sure you spell things wrong on purpose so it will work.
2009-05-30, 1:34 AM #17
Uh... dude, you DO realise that GSC are Ukranian, right? Most of the non-Cyrillic is basically just bastardised Russian, and by the looks of things "neytral" is a pretty good approximation of нейтрально, the й being a sort-of-"j" sound.

Hell, Duty are constantly referred to as DOLG, the sort-of-romanised analogue to Долг.

Reminds me of all the misc files buried in Operation Flashpoint like models that are entirely in Czech.

I picked up Roadside Picnic from the library yesterday. The little I've read so far is damn cool. Once I'm through with Farcry 2, STALKER will be next on the list.

your screenshots are too damn big.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I enjoyed the first game a fair bit. Its anomalies were cool and the terrain and graphics were cool.

The first time I met some of the paranormal enemies was crap your pants scary (The mind flaying thingy and the flame thingy)

Its something I might get back into, assuming I can get steam to take my credit card.

Oblivion Lost is the best mod for this game ever.

Man, I wanna get back to STALKER now.

Yeah, but the word "Stalker" came from a 1972 Russian sci-fi novella "Roadside Picnic." In fact, a lot of game's inspired by it.
