The Stalker series is a pair (Soon the be a trio- more on that later) of survival-horror games that I, and many others, find to be epic masterpieces... If you take the time to make them work that is.
Stalker: Shadow Of Chernobyl was released in 2007 by GSC after a long time in development hell, when it was released the players got hit in the face with relentless bugs and broken gameplay, however the bugs have been patched and mods have truly brought out this games potential. The game uses the X-Ray engine which is something you have to see to believe. Well Valve is mucking around making flashlights independant light sources, X-ray has a full lighting system- every single light emiting object will cast it's own shadows. This is used to spectacular effect with the Day/Night and weather cycle of the game. If you played it before and thought it was bad, now is the perfect time to try again. A mod of note would be this: Stalker Complete 2009 which makes the game look better, play better and work better. If you have the time it's worth it to merge this mod with Arsenal mod- which adds 180 new weapons to the game. Of course you need to understand alot of the games workings to get this to work.

Stalker: Clear Sky is the second game in the series, and bills itself as a stand alone prequel to the original. Clear Sky uses an enhanced version of the engine. Supporting DX10 effects and generally being smoother, or it would if the mapping and AI weren't so shoddy. At release this game was covered in even more bugs then the original, as such most modders have strayed away from this one and it has, for the most part, died off as far as major modding is concerned. I personally think it is a good game with loads of potential, but i can see why some people hate it.

Stalker: Call of Pripyet is the third in this series, and is a direct sequel to the events in SHOC, Not much is known about it other then the fact that new locations are going to be much larger, it uses a newer version of the engine, and they have a new test team (THANK GOD).

It really stands for "Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, Robber" But really it just sounds cool
Yes, Steam version of SHOC has no MP, but the MP isn't that great anyway.
