Well, if you are going to go all-out on the "viewing experience," might as well make it have good image quality and colors.

1) Yeah it's cool as a novelty, but I wouldn't want that cinerama screen, because as mentioned earlier, you would have trouble seeing the whole screen at once (even on my 50" I have issues with that if I sit too close).

2) that picture is just ridiculous. Yes I would love to have that room in my house. But that must have been insanely pricey.. like in the millions.

I'd play pong on that just to piss off the owner.

I'd hate that for watching movies or normal computing, but I'd bet you could sit back far enough to make it awesome in games. Sniper rifle would suck with that monitor, though.

I'm setting up a 32 inch LCD HDTV for testing/editing tomorrow. I cannot wait. Would there be anything wrong with using it for normal gaming and computing, as well as a TV? Maybe I should make a new thread....

Would rather have the monitor to be honest.

Why the hell would anyone need a 50" TV?
nope.
2009-05-31, 2:51 PM #27
well.. I don't "need" it. But here's the benifits as I see it.

Pros:
1) My eye sight isn't that great. Larger screen means larger text for reading (ie subtitled films, or reading menu's on your digital cable).

2) When playing computer games, I get to sit on my comfortable couch. :)

3) Streaming movies/video online. (Yay netflix)

Cons:
1) Eyes get strained after a bit from the distance if I'm trying to read stuff on websites (yay for zoom feature on firefox)

2) Can't play video games and watch tv at the same time.

3) If I sit too close (sometimes i sit on the floor to help with the eye strain) I can't see the whole screen at once. Can be a bad thing during fast-paced games.

(edit: Oh and NewKid, with my housing allowance, I make almost 50k a year. Plus I got a $5000 bonus (which was partly used to buy the tv). My total monthly expenses are only about 2500. Do the math.

I use a 32" (I think ... might be bigger) HDTV as my HTPC's monitor. It rocks. haha.

you are getting paid too much, unless you're either 1) directly involved in the war(s), 2) at sea, 3) a mid-level commissioned officer or 4) been in the service for like 10 years. i expected as a noncom you would have to be at least E-7 to get that much.

if you are none of the above, that's pretty bogus.

no not really because thats including our rent.

are you talking about the BAH/COLA?

iirc sarn is E-3, under 2 yrs of service. if that's correct, and the BAH is the only bonus you get, the BAH comes out to a freakin' $30,000 (assuming the total income is at $50K) not even including income tax on base pay. even if it isnt the only bonus, a bonus of $30,000 is pretty ridiculous esp. when it's more than your base pay, AND it's not taxed.

so i guess everything makes sense now. typical american spending machine.

calculation: bonuses = 50000-(12*1650) ~= 30000

Can't wait till I get a 54" plasma so I can play video games sitting even further away. :carl:

the BAH actually fluctuates depending on your location. ours is about 2000 a month. and its closer to 40k a year

Geesh, I recently also got a 50" plasma and I love it. However, I do wish I had the money to get the 65" that would have been so much cooler. Bigger the better.

Sitting to close to big screens doesn't bother me, if the framerate of the video is high enough.

Watching a movie in theaters is a real eyesore, but playing something like Counter-Strike @ 200fps is just awesome.
2009-06-01, 4:49 PM #37
Pass.
I would rather have a normal monitor then that over-size bent thing.
You can't judge a book by it's file size
2009-06-01, 5:03 PM #38
she forgot I also get BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistance). My pay breaks down as follows:

Base pay: $1650
BAH (housing): $1900
BAS (food): $326 (ish, can't remember exactly off the top of my head)
Total: $3876

Over 12 months is: $46,512
add $5k bonus.. $51,512

(note: the bonus and all pay IS taxed, unless I'm in a combat zone. (I got about $3700 of that $5k bonus).)
(note 2: the housing allowance (BAH) changes depending on where you live, and is based on the average cost of a monthly mortgage in the area (in this case San Diego).)

[edit: Oh also, as I mentioned before, I'm advancing to E4 (yay) which is happening this Friday. But I won't start getting paid for it for probably another 6 months or so (stupid Navy).]

Each to his/her own. Sitting too close to big screens doesn't bother me if the resolution and FOV of the video is also high enough. It looks like this curved monstrosity has awesome horizontal pixels and FOV.

So I got the TV, and I need to get a DVI to HDMI cable, but the instructions in the TV says it can only take VGA from a PC. The only VGA coming out of my computer is a male.

I have to wait 5 days to enjoy my TV while a cable comes in the mail, and then the TV might not even accept the God damned signal.
