I really couldn't care any less about this person's decision, what intrigued me was the switching between "him" and "her". Is this a normal way to refer to someone who is transgender? If so, it's confusing as hell.

The author of the article refers to her as a her, but she's referred to as a he in the quotes/paraphrase.

I accidentally referred to a MTF transgendered person with a masculine pronoun, and pretty much received a death threat as a result from her FTM friend.
And then she, or possibly both of them, went on to drive a friend of mine to attempting suicide, if I have the story right. The three were in an extremely confusing polyamorous relationship. I think most people required some kind of flow chart to be drawn in order to understand the whole thing.

I have noticed that trans-genders tend to be extremely violent.

You call them whatever gender they identify as.

I didn't realize the first time was a quote. Makes more sense now.

Vin, so it matters more what they identify as and less about the physical aspect?

This is interesting because in my criminal justice class we're going over how transgender people are treated in prison. It seems to be a big problem because if they are housed according to what they identify as, they may be sexually assaulted by inmates and/or guards. However, if they are housed according to their physical attributes, they often suffer from emotional problems and can be ridiculed by other inmates.

Yep. I've had some first-hand experience with this one, and journalistic style requires referring to people by the gender they consider themselves to be.

There are quite a number of FTM transsexuals who kept their vaginas, like porn star Buck Angel (Google if you dare- I think he's hot.) They're still referred to as male though... if they want to be.

Saw it on some talk show, it was rather unnerving.

That could be because FTM's have to go through a testosterone therapy.
