Massassi (and every hosted site on my server) will be down for up to 24 hours this week. I have purchased a new server with much better specifications than our current server, and surprisingly for less money.

The server will be going down at 2:00 PM EST TODAY.

Since the server is moving, the IP will change, which means that a DNS change will occur. This will likely be the most prominent reason for downtime during the move.

For anyone curious, our current specs are:

AMD Athlon64 3500+
2GB (1+1GB extra cost) RAM
160GB HD
2TB of bandwidth
CentOS 4.5

Our new server will be:

Intel Core2Duo E8400
2GB RAM Standard
250GB HD
4TB of Bandwidth
CentOS 5

Curious, why do some DNS changes take so long? With my registrar, NameCheap, they are almost instantaneous. I don't think I've ever had to wait more than 5 minutes for a change to propagate.

It has nothing to do with the registrar. The changes START propagating immediatly, but the speed at which you get the changes is based on you dns server's cache settings.

Oh, okay. I thought some registrars did some dreck where DNS changes were only processed once every 12 or 24 hours.

Bugger, I might actually get some work done.

You can set the TTL to 0 to get the changes to get everywhere instantaneously.

Of course you'll have to do that early enough so that every server knows of the change of the TTL.
Sorry for the lousy German

Resetting the TTL on 30+ domains is not fun nor easy.

Right now the TTL is 14400 anyway (only 4 hours), but sadly many DNS caching servers and clients totally ignore this value and do whatever they feel like. I've seen TTLs of 10 seconds be cached for over 12 hours before.

Edit: Also, I have decided on the date and time. The server will be going down today at 2:00PM EST. That's 5 hours from this post.
