Do you think it would foster a second renaissance of JK editing/gaming? It's done it for Quake and Quake II, even though the resurgences were small, it still got new people into the games, and brought old people back as well.

Too bad LA would probably never support their games being made available on Steam.
2009-06-15, 6:13 PM #2
Although now that I think about it, the continued popularity of Quake and Quake II is also partially due to the source code being available...
2009-06-15, 6:14 PM #3
Probably not. People would just think it's Jedi Outcast. :carl:

Lucasarts is far too dumb for it, But I would buy a digital copy for 10 bux or less.

It would be a nightmare though with all the people trying to get JK to work. Which it is now with some people on this very forum.

No so much for more recent titles though.

If it actually worked with 3d acceleration on among other fixes, yes.

Not only that but Quake I/II was friendlier to editors and the editing community than JK ever was.

I rather see a new title in the Jedi Knight series (made by a competent developer, i.e. not LucasArts) than a renaissance with an outdated artifact of DF2:JK.

It works fine with 3d acceleration on for me. Worked fine straight out the box in XP.
TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

Roger: Same here, but I couldn't get it to work fullscreen in Vista. So 8-bit windowed mode only. Fortunately I don't use Vista. :D

If it had Vista fixes I'd definitely buy a copy. I don't know if it'd spawn an editing renaissance, but it would definitely help me shake my habit of not putting my JK CDs in the crawlspace.
2009-06-16, 12:58 AM #11
GOG.com fix loads of old games for Vista and XP. If Steam don't, they might. (If LA let them)

I'd buy.

LucasArts didn't make JO or JA.

Or maybe it'd prompt you to throw them away, since it'd be all on the Steam service :p

By the way, does JK work with Windows 7 64 bits?

About as well as it does in Vista 32-bit.

32-bit and 64-bit doesn't matter to it, and little changed from Vista to 7.

Well... the installer won't work, because they used a version of InstallShield that was ancient in 1997 and it has a whole bunch of 16-bit code that doesn't work in 64-bit. Then again, maybe it'll work in the Windows XP VM.

I'll never throw away my JK CDs. The price of lexan can only go up.
2009-06-16, 8:35 PM #19
Yes, but otherwise it's fine. I've played JK in 32 and 64-bit Vista and there was never a problem. Just add -windowgui to the command line to take care of the menu problems.

You're more likely to run into problems if you have a newer ATI, and maybe nVidia video card. You'll get HOM like crazy and it'll be unplayable in hardware mode.

The alternative would be to either use another machine, or get a secondary PCI or PCI-e video card that is older and capable of playing JK (GeForce 6000 line is good and affordable, under $30), and use a monitor with a secondary input.

I also tried running JK inside an XP VM (VMware Workstation) with Direct3D virtualization but that didn't help. I suppose it wouldn't, it's just forwarding the calls to the actual hardware so it'll still be broken.

JK worked fine on my Vista 64 for exactly one play-through of the singleplayer campaign. All attempts to start the game afterwards have failed, even with the exact same driver version and a clean wipe of the registry and all game files. It's bizarre. All I get now is a black screen.

that's bizarre

i'm running it in windows 7 x64 with compatibilty mode set to xp, visual themes off, running as admin, and -windowgui

still runs slow, as in not even 60fps. on an 8600m gt.

oh well

Sorry, I could never forgive Ravensoft for making the characters "slouch" while standing. How could they have ever possibly thought that this looked right?

...almost as bad as Pandemic Studios doing it Star Wars: Battlefront.

Back in the day, Lucasart was pretty much the "end-all-be-all" of game designing. After they gave up on continued development of the Sith Engine (while they were developing "Obi-wan"), that was the end of it. After that, the majority of the games they passed on to another development company. Now Star Wars games are starting to get the bad rap that Star Trek games started getting about 10 years ago.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. :D

The "slouch" made sense for a ready stance, but not for idle stances.

yeah, they tried making the characters stand up straight sometimes in JA, and that looked worse. :gonk:

I had a similar issue. Once I turned off Anti-aliasing in nVidia control panel it fixed it.

I'd play JK for the rest of my ****ing life if it had a better netcode, dedicated server support, an in-game server locator, graphics at least as good as JK Enhanced & in-game support for downloading & playing addons.
? :)

JK works with 3d acceleration for me. My hardware specs are on this website. 1280x1024 resolution with 3d acceleration enabled.

With newer ATI (and probably nVidia) hardware, the entire scene will be covered with HOM effects, making it unplayable.
