Would there be worldwide mayhem and confusion due to the disappearence of the greatest superhighway of information? Online companies negativily impacted, people angered, gamers pissed, relationships crashed, population productivity loss, personal pleasure missed?

I say we should try one day without the internet for the hell of it to see what happens.

Not this gamer. I've come to hate, loathe, and dispise online gaming recently. Everyone is a freaking moron and way to immature.

Anyone catch the irony here? But you are right.
I think thousands of forums goers and gamers, should probably keep cyanide tablets next to their PC's for just such an emergency.

When you say "lose the internet" do you mean lose all computer networking, or just the internet as it currently exists? Even if all of the major backbones and nameservers were destroyed and it were impossible (for some reason) to rebuild them, we'd still end up forcing the phone system into a similar role just because the internet is a necessary and inevitable evolution of human communications.

If you want an immediate and obvious impact, you only need to look at the retail and financial sectors. The flow of money between bank accounts is almost entirely regulated by internet servers. This includes local debit and credit access, such as ATMs and in-store systems. Without the internet *or* modem access, everybody would have to go back to using those metal sliding things.

Actually I think I still have one of those kicking around somewhere.

It annoys my friend that even though I spend more time in front of the computer than she does, I can handle a day or two, or even a week without the internet a lot better than she can.

I've been thinking about this, and I think the most destructive attack that could take place in America and Western Europe would be an EMP bomb.

Several synchronised EMP attacks across the country would utterly cripple it. All electronic equipment would be destroyed, all computers would be useless, as would mobile phones. Communication would be limited to carrier pidgeons. The military would be crippled.
Electricity generators are rendered useless, so fridges and freezers and useless. Unloading food from cargo boats would be difficult.
There would be no street lights, no lights at all. At night, there'd be mass looting.
As food shortages become an issue, there'd mass rioting. A country is only three meals away from revolution.

Not only would there be huge civil disorder, but the country would be totally open to invasion too.

Makes you think how reliant western nations are on electronics.
