The eternal roommate thermostat debate
2009-06-22, 7:21 PM #1
Alright, I've got a roommate who is completely stupid. He also never cleans a damn thing. And I mean EVER. Literally, ever. He has never cleaned anything.

Today it was 100 degrees F out here in Oklahoma. Do you know what temperature it was in my apartment when I got back from work? 65F. Now, I like to have the thermostat at 76F. That's how I grew up, we lived in California and Arizona, and I like 76F with my ceiling fan going. So, I'm freezing in here, and not only that, but I'm PAYING to have this damn air conditioner running to MAKE me cold. So, I keep turning the thing up to 70-72F, which I figure is a fair compromise, right? Well, it keeps magically going back down to 65.

My roommate comes in finally and asks if I keep turning the thermostat up, and I I tell him yeah, I do, it's freezing in here and it is hot as hell outside, and I'm not paying to keep this place at 65. He tells me he "can't breathe in here, it's so hot" and asks if we can compromise. I told him I already compromised, I like it at 76, but no one agrees with me so I turn it down around 71, and asked him if he had his fan on. He said "No I don't, i mean it's real hot can't you open a window or use a blanket?" To which I responded "No, I'm not going to run the air condition to turn 100 degree air into 65 degree air and then put a blanket on, that's stupid. He then "compromised" at "69" and walked off, and when I went in there to check again it was on 67.

So here's my question: Am I right in thinking I'm being reasonable and he's being ridiculous?

And how about we have the customary "what temperature do you like your room at?" thread, while we're at it?

My parents like 70, I like 60 (Dwarfs usually have a difficult time cooling down). I bought a room-AC and it works perfectly. He'd have to get a nice one, else they're a joke.

I like it around 71-72. If I had a ceiling fan 75 would be fine, but I don't. Good thing electric's cheap at this place.

The guys a dick. Kick him out and find a new roommate if you can. Also, point out that if it's so hot that he can't breathe he should thus be unable to ever exit the building and walk outside.

Or google your thermostat for the info, then pop the case off of the thermostat and then disable the wire that controls the button to turn the air down, and set it at 72. Pop the case back on. I had a roommate (in a college dorm so I was stuck with him) that kept on changing the air to 80 when during the hottest part of summer and the 3 other people that lived there liked it at 70-74. When he wouldn't stop I just undid the connection for the wire that controlled the up button and the one for the heat. Problem solved.

Whatever you do, don't let somebody just walk over you. Man up, especially if you're paying for the bill.

"Room temperature" is 70-74 degrees Fahrenheit. Most people when wearing closes prefer this (I always set mine to 72).

I learned this lesson a long time ago, and I fully intend to rectify this situation one way or another. I just know that I can definitely be a dick sometimes, so I like to double-check when I think I'm being reasonable.

I like your shady rewiring idea. I might have to do that if we can't see eye to eye. Or I can't intimidate him. Or make him leave.

If someone undid the up button on the thermostat, I'd turn it all the way down.

Well, ours is a ghetto old one with the little lever at the bottom that you adjust left-right for temperature, not the button kind.

What's your housing situation? Is it a dorm, a place where roommates are assigned by the complex and you have your rooms that need a key, or a place where you just split a townhouse or apartment with someone and that's it?

Unless it's the last one, you probably can't kick him out. If it's the first or second nicely ask him and whoever owns the place to just switch roommates with another suite or volunteer to.

Make sure you look on your thermostat to find the brand and model number and google that for a manual. If it's not on the outside, it will be on the inside of the front panel. You've got to make sure you're unscrewing/undoing the connections on the right wires. Make sure you set the temperature at 72 before you start, and then make sure you don't end up zapping yourself.

Try to talk to him, and if all else fails, threaten to deck him if he doesn't compromise. As I learned when my sister's roommate hit her, if he does call the cops and there is no witnesses then the cops can't do anything about it unless you leave a mark on him. If he's way bigger than you (which I doubt because this guy sounds like a pussy) then... I donno, hit the gym or something.

hmm. I'm not sure how to do the lever kind. If you can't disable a setting past a certain point, superglue?

He's being pretty unreasonable. Hell, the cost of running the AC to keep a place 65 degrees must be astronomical. My first thought was that he turn a fan on or something.
Pissed Off?

Shoot him.

It's a dorm-style apartment complex. Locks on the individual rooms style. You get to pick your roommates and stuff...except one of our roommates left and they placed this guy in with us.

I figure there's 3 of us (well, 2, one of us is on vacation out east at the moment) so we should be able to convince him to shape up or leave. I just gotta get the others convinced that it's worth the trouble.

Well it's time to show him otherwise.
2009-06-22, 9:32 PM #16
Does he pay more rent to make up for all the extra energy that costs you?
2009-06-22, 9:35 PM #17
I keep it at 78.
2009-06-22, 9:38 PM #18
I barely use the A/C even in my car.

Edit: Content. He is being unreasonable. 65 is freezing and your utility bill is going to be astronomical. I'm seconding the "kick him out" option.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

See, Vin, you're a Phoenix person, too, right? You know how it is.

Yeah, I never turn on the air conditioning in my jeep unless I'm stuck in traffic or otherwise prevented from having decent airflow. It just seems like a waste in the name of "comfort".

And yeah, I'm considering offering to let him set the thermostat to whatever he wants if he'll pay extra on the electric bill. Maybe he can pay part of my rent, too, since I'm the only one who has ever cleaned our (shared) bathroom and he will never wash dishes or pick up his mess from cooking. I dunno...this was kind of the last straw, really. There will be action.

Start keeping all your dishes in your room. Same with toilet paper, toothpaste, stuff like that. Let his garbage and dirty dishes stack up, while you keep yours clean and tucked away where he can't find them.
2009-06-22, 10:50 PM #23
I like it at ~21 C. If it gets warmer, I start to get uncomfortable.

If you cannot get a fair compromise on the thermostat settings, make him pay a higher percentage of the electric bill to account for his excessive consumption.

I like it at 65 too, but 71 is fine too.

My thermostat's broken. It's set at something like 74, but I can never be sure what the actual temperature is in this apartment. Generally I just flip the AC to "off" when I get too cold or leave the apartment, and "auto" when I get too warm.

I also very carefully did not get a roommate, so I can screw around with the thermostat as much as I like.

:ninja:

I'm gonna be there in a couple of weeks...

Anyway, I don't have AC and I'm on the 3rd floor. When it's 90 outside, it's HOT. Winter..thermostat is usually set around 60-65.

Flatmate is being a tool, either kick him out or make him pay more rent to cover the electricity bill.

Also, damn people. 60F (16C) is bloody freezing. Not only is that jumper weather, it's trackies, beanies, gloves and ugg boots weather.

If it's less than 27C (80F) it's too damn cold.

Having had my home at both 60 and 80 degrees, I can't understand why anyone would ever find either desirable.

You'd get your *** kicked for wearing gloves and beanies etc. at 60F here. That's pretty much shorts and T-shirt weather.

I live in a sub-tropical climate. It's hot and humid. Unless something unusual happens, our winter day time temps are around 15-20C (~60-68F). As you can imagine this is not my favourite time of year.
