I like these kinds of stories, but what sucks is you never hear anything about them ever again. This is neat, but it will probably never get back to the media and we'll never know what happened.

After reading the article, I don't understand it. She IS aging, but only certain parts of her body and bones? Crazy.

Anyone know whatever happened to the boy who had terminal cancer and was given a few months to live and the cancer just disappeared? Or the girl from Russia that claimed to be able to "see" illnesses?

Guess what was the very first listed condition?

Except that you're taking care of a toddler you've no really life of your own. Not to mention they will never see her grow up, achieve anything in life, laugh with them and make jokes, share their experiences, etc. I know you meant it as a joke, but I just find this whole thing really sad.

It's in the middle, really.

It's not massive, but it's not tiny. It's not painful, except when I get severe "inflammations" (Some people have constant chronic pain). As mentioned, I did post a pic a while back, but I think I took it down later, as I didn't want to leave it up. It's pretty messy, with all the debulking surgery scars on it.

Yeah I completely agree, and you're right it was a joke. Still I find that if you can't laugh about it when stuff like this happens in your life, you'll never be able to get through it. The mother seems to have made her peace with it.

Also, here's another, slightly older, but more thorough article.

You guys do know this person, "the baby that does not age," has severe medical conditions, right? She had strokes, seizures and tumors. I'm sure one of her conditions will get her sooner or later.

Sucks to be her.

Surviving extremely painful horrible things does not make them anymore pleasant

I agree, but she survived against all odds none the less. It's not just that she made a full recovery, it's that there's no trace of the illnesses afterwards. That is really interesting.
2009-06-24, 8:26 AM #28
True, it's just the way you responded to ECHOMAN's post seemed to imply that it didn't suck to be her... I maintain it does.

It's not like she's particularly enjoying it. She's 16 and has the mental capacity of a toddler.

It would suck to be her, in many ways: socially, physically, mentally... is there anything even good about being her?

Not what I meant, but I see where it could have been interpreted that way.

Quote:

From our cognitive point of view I would agree. However, she still has the cognitive perspective of a toddler. You know the old saying, "you don't know what you have until you lost it"? She's never had it to begin with, so from her point of view she's enjoying the life of a toddler.

I do understand what you guys are saying. I really do and from an 'out of the box' perspective, I agree. I wouldn't want to live that way either. I just wanted to point out:

  1. Even though she's had several serious illnesses in the last 16 years, she's made full and complete recoveries from them. She's recovered from illnesses that otherwise healthy individuals may have died from. That's amazing, and I didn't want that point to be down played.
  2. Even though we know it would suck to be a toddler because you're limited on what you can do, cognitively, she probably doesn't understand the benefits what comes with growing older. Namely being self-sufficient (ie, not needing someone else to wipe your butt for you).

That's the points I was making. It all depends on your point of view, I suppose.

I agree with your points Alco, and considered them myself. I just think about how bad those serious illnesses would be, especially from the point of view of someone who has no idea what's happening.
Still, I wonder if she views the world with fresh curios eyes everyday as a baby does, with everything being fascinating and brilliant that would be something.

She went to a trial in Britain in which she agreed to what was passing and failing, and then subsequently failed. Also, in the test, it took over 3 hours for her to examine the 14 people, which seems like a bit much if you could supposedly see through them.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

Down play what? I said that there is probably a significant chance of her succumbing to one of her many medical conditions, in addition to living an already abnormal life. Because she had been close to dying and recovered doesn't change the fact that she is living considerably on the edge.

Remember when Mr. Burns was diagnosed with EVERYTHING, and the only reason he was still alive was that because he had EVERYTHING all at once, all those conditions were sort of clogging up his mechanism for death? Then he was like I'M IMMORTAL and the doctor said something about how a mere gust of wind could prove fatal for him.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
