So I was watching the ANH DVD today, and I was surprised at something I saw.

I was of the understanding that they went in and fixed/repaired a lot of the dodgy effects with the Special Editions.

Can anyone else verify this, so I know I'm not losing any more of my mind:

Chapter 39 - the sequence where they are fleeing the Death Star and have a small (and repetitive) battle with 4 TIE-fighters. On the "outside" shots of the TIEs flying by, there's a faint square around them as they move (eg. 1:34:36).

I thought those had been removed, and yet, there they are.

Anyone else notice this? I took a screencap and jacked-up the brightness so it was really obvious.

With the Special Edition and latest re-release, they did go back and repair it to some degree, but it's still not perfect. Same sort of thing in ESB, you can still see through the Snowspeeder cockpits.

They had a choice between slightly transparent cockpits and big giant black lines around everything. Black lines are fine in space. Not so much on snow. You can see the lines around the AT-ATs in the original version.

Actually, these things were done for a re-release that came out about a year or so before Special Edition. the only thing done in the Special Edition version was the addition of the new scenes.
