It's the price that you've been waiting for, but don't wait too long.

ZoomWith Windows 7 official pricing now out in the open, Microsoft is offering a special deal for those looking to pre-order Home Premium or Professional starting tomorrow.

The special offer from Microsoft prices the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade at $49.99 – a huge savings from the usual price of $119.99. Those looking for the Professional version can get for half price at $99.99 as part of the deal.

The deal will be offered through the Microsoft store online or at select retail partners such as Best Buy or Amazon. Stay tuned to this page for a list of all participating retailers.

Microsoft did say that supplies would be limited, but declined to offer details on just how limited. Given that it’ll be offered both online and in brick and mortar stores, we’re guessing that it’ll be something you’ll want to act on quickly, but not something you’ll need to camp out for.

This program begins tomorrow in the U.S., Canada and Japan. European pre-orders will start on July 15, but Microsoft has yet to announce the full details in those markets.

I think I will bite.

Don't forget, upgrades invalidate your old Windows key and you can't do a fresh install with it, IIRC.

Still better than paying $200 for full retail. :P

Are the requirements for 7 much more than Vistas?
nope.
2009-06-25, 6:20 PM #7
They're at most the same if not less.

What Emon said. I think some people are running 7 on netbooks.

I remember reading the reqs were exactly the same. I also remember reading that it's virtually identical in all benchmarks, but that the whole thing feels a lot more responsive.

There's just no way. NO way. After using it for a good period of time it feels so much faster than vista, even with gaming.

I wish I had the money to jump on this. Ah well.

You call this a discount, I call this paid beta testing. I'll let Win7 marinate for about a year like I do all MS OS and then bite after the first service pack (or two) when everything works nominally.

Lyrics are highly overrated.

I ran the beta and now have a system running RC1. I like it.

If you'd used it for even five seconds you'd shut the **** up. Not to mention, there's a reason DOSBOX exists.

thanks for posting this :)

And btw I think you can clean install -- you just have to have an existing valid Vista license (which as mentioned will be invalidated)

I'm sorta stuck though because I want/need W7 Pro but I only have Vista Home Premium. So I think I can't use this cuz I have to get the full version. Bleeegh.

I'm pretty sure you can get Pro and upgrade...

You can use the Windows 7 upgrade from an XP system, so I don't see why Vista HP wouldn't work.

Bah whatever. I just ordered the Home Premium upgrade. MS says it won't charge me until it comes out so if I change my mind I'll just cancel it.

I ordered the download version because my tablet doesn't have an optical drive ... how do you install from iso again? >_<

Kinda wishing that I waited on getting an OS for my new PC. Windows 7 is pretty sexy. Meh, oh well.
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

Went ahead and ordered Pro to throw on my MBP when it comes out. Probably gonna get a copy of Pro or Ultimate on release day at work to throw on my M4400 there too.
2009-06-26, 6:43 AM #22
In fact you HAVE to clean install according to the guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2009/jun/25/windows7-uk-prices

We get botty raped for the £1 = $1 though.

They have to make up for all the fines the EU has been charging over the years.
2009-06-26, 8:02 AM #24
Hehe.

At that price I'm almost tempted for my vmware fusion type partition. Apart from I've got XP working and that does everything I need...

What are the differences between Pro and Ultimate anyway?

Just a few extra features that most people won't care about. It's not like Vista where Pro (Business) didn't include stuff like Media Center.

According to that wikipedia page, the OEM version - what most people will get on new machines - won't have a changeable wallpaper.

What. The. ****.
2009-06-26, 4:05 PM #28
No that's the Starter version. OEM Home Premium is the same as Retail Home Premium.

That's only for Starter. No PCs will come with Starter except for some netbook models.

Doh, too slow.

I wonder what the final cost will be for the full version that includes a new key.

Windows 7 is vastly superiour to Vista.

Also, I just read something on Ars Technica... If you're going to a lesser version of Windows with 7, you need to clean install?

For instance I'd be going from Vista Ultimate to 7 Premium. Would an upgrade suffice or would I need the full copy?
