Why wouldn't it work?

I was under the impression that the majority of touchscreen phones are pretty watertight. I mean, how many opening do these things have?

Yeah especially when you can't replace the battery lolol

Wouldn't water be able to come in through the speaker phone holes on the bottom?

If you don't specifically make something to be watertight I'd think it wouldn't be very watertight.

What's the electrical conductivity of chlorinated water?

Enough to kill if lightning strikes it, I know that much. It's not distilled water.

This isn't even mildly impressive.

It's normally just tap water with added chlorine, and put on a filter. so i imagine it would be as conductive as normail tap water!

I dropped my Razor in the pool...swam to the bottom to pick it up, yanked the battery, hit it with the air compressor until water stopped coming out of it, put the battery back in and it regained full functionality. So this doesn't surprise at all.

not really
more ions more conductivity

wait nevermind thats retarded[edit]

if it was salt water, say the ocean, much more conductivity because more ions
but i dont know about just chlorine

no wait [edit]

if its chlorine solution that breaks into "hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ion (OCl-)" in the ater then i'd assume the conductivity to be higher than just normal tap water
normal tap water

also depends on how much **** is in your tap water too
if you have like loads of calcium ions and other ions maybe the conductivity of your tap water would be higher

I assumed so, I wasn't sure if chlorinated water had any odd properties to inhibit conduction.

Remember that any openings on the iPhone are small and don't lead anywhere, meaning there will be air pressure to keep the water out. I wouldn't try this with anything non-waterproof and if it happened I would shut it off immediately and let it dry out.

Why couldn't it still work? As long as the circuit board doesn't get flooded while its on, nothing's going to jump. The iphone is all tightly packed, so it's going to take longer to fill with water.

I've repaired laptops that have been submerged in water so this isn't all that impressive to me.
? :)

It's only sodium hypochlorite if the person uses liquid chlorinator, such as clorox or bottles from the pool store. Granulated is sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione, tablets are trichloro-s-triazinetrione, and there is also lithium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorate. They all produce almost the same result, but there's different things being added to the water.

Also keep in mind that pools are usually kept at a slighty basic pH, 7.4 - 8, which shifts the carbonic system in favor of more ionic dissociation, if my chemistry memory serves....(confirm anybody?)

Bottom line, I'd guess the water is only slightly more conductive than tap water.
2009-06-28, 9:56 AM #19
My point was that it wasn't going to be unconductive!

My RAZR died after I went on the log ride at Six Flags :(

My razr died after being dropped two feet.

My replacement razr is stashed as backup in case I break this lg versa I just bought.

The razr is a horribly fragile phone that should not be compared to anything.

Heh, my old sony ericson k310 was dropped countless times. I replaced it a few weeks ago when the joystick on it for navigating menus broke, but it still works.
Nothing to see here, move along.

sony ericsons are absolutly bombproof, once all the cosmetic bits fall off. i've had mine for 2 years, it has about 200 dead pixels from sweat/impact damage from a circle pit, but other than that and the headphone port (never used anyway) being abit shoddy it works fine.

You guys lie, the RAZR is bulletproof. I've had mine for 2 years and it's had the **** beat out of, dropped countless times from my lap to the pavement when I get out of the car, dropped to the bottom of the pool, tons of text messages sent every single day, it's been great. Although I am ready to move on, the battery doesn't hold much of a charge anymore.

I'm the same way, minus the battery. I would just like to get a phone with QWERTY keyboard.

I guess I'll find out how well the LG Versa holds up then.
