Deals thread
2009-06-29, 11:23 PM #1
Since I'm sure JLee and I aren't the only frugally-oriented Massassians, and since we have a recent purchases thread to match / show off our material spoils, I'm thinking why not just have an ongoing bump-able deals thread instead of scattered new threads every once in a while?

Sites of interest (feel free to add):
Slickdeals
RetailMeNot
FatWallet

If it turns out this thread is a flop it can just be lost to the archives

Not a specific deal but a tip:

If you have a Microcenter near you and are interested in good deals on computers, you should check their closeout/openbox sections daily. Unfortunately these type of deals are always PICKUP ONLY. Because of their limited quanity you wont find them posted on slickdeals.net or similar sites, but the deals are so good sometimes I feel like I am robbing them.

A couple days ago DELL was selling PSP-2000 models for $109. Not sure if that's still going on.

I have a question about Microcenter -- if it says "In-Store pickup only" like it does for the i7 920, do you HAVE to order online and pick it up in-store to get the price showing on the site? Or can you walk in and just buy it like normal? (It would seem silly if the latter were true but you never know ...)

You don't have to order online for deals like that, they usually have a significant inventory of those.

But for the Closeout/OpenBox stuff, you are better off ordering online and waiting for the confirmation email stating its ready for pickup. Their inventory system isnt perfect (they take orders around the clock, but only process them and update it during normal store hours) and sometimes the item isnt in stock. Also it can take the store employees awhile to locate the item.

Aside from what was already mentioned...

www.searchtempest.com]Search Tempest - searches craigslist by distance!
www.pricegrabber.com]pricegrabber - Good for price comparisons
www.newegg.com]newegg - signup for their newsletter for great deals
www.amazon.com]amazon - always price check with amazon before you buy. They often surprise me.

Tip: If you live in California, newegg charges tax, but amazon doesn't.

On that note. My dad swears by http://www.mp3sales.ru You can see how cheap the music is, in fact they are offering all MJ stuff for free.

No kidding. I once bought two digital KVMs capable of switching between four workstations, for $0.99. They originally retailed for over $200. I've always wondered if it was a mistake of some sort, or an employee marked them down and planned to pick them up later...

Those Russian sites get shut down quite often, any music you purchase on them is illegal. They don't have any licenses for the music they sell.

No Cool Matty, that site has been around for quite some time now (not saying it ISN'T illegal) but it's been around for a little bit.

Great place for good prices on games. I don't think I have ever paid $60 for a PS3 game without some sort of deal or special offer.

I grabbed three BC945G motherboards that were being tossed at work today. One of them had a Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz 800 FSB in it. So far the one with the chip works great. :awesome:

I'm probably going to use the P4 for my media center and put a Core 2 Duo that has virtualization support in another for my VMware ESXi-based server.

In preparation for Scribblenauts I picked up a Nintendo DS for $99 (bout $80 US) on Catch of the Day yesterday. I dont know how much they go for elsewhere but that's less than half of the RRP over here.

Us canucks have redflagdeals.com but pretty much everyone up here already knows about it. It's so popular in Toronto that as soon as anything gets posted there if it's a hot deal it will be sucked dry in a matter of hours :P

There is also likely a Woot-Off tonight, as I got the newsletter today and they've been hinting at it / it's due
