Big house

[Now with pics at the bottom!]

Last night a friend picked me up to show me his parents new house. I didn't think much about it, until we pulled up to the gate. There in the distance was a huge house. A 16,000 square foot house. No, not 1600, 16,000.

This was easily the nicest/largest/fanciest house I've ever been in. 50x15 foot indoor pool, library, living room with 20-25 foot ceiling, elevator, billiard room, study, movie theater that seats 18 in reclinable theater seats (with surround sound, etc), music room, sauna, 3 car garage with an oil pit, a fountain in the foyer, I remember seeing at least 3 jacuzzis, humidity controlled wine cellar...

Anyway, I was totally blown away. His parents are in their late 70s, and it's just the two of them in this gigantic house.

My house (to understand why I was so blown away) is a teeny 1200 square feet. I'll try to get pictures the next time I'm over there (prolly next week).

How about you guys? Been in a fancy house? Live in a fancy house?

That's not even a house when you get that big. I don't see why anyone would want that much space. I'd like lots of land, but my house doesn't need to be that big. I almost bought a 5800sq ft house a while back, it had 5 bedrooms and was near a college so my plan was to rent them out to pay for the house... buttt I backed out lol.

My new apartment is 1400 square feet. Aside from that the biggest house I've been in was my uncles and it was probably around 3000 square feet.

To be fair, the house had 2 levels: 10,000 on the first floor, and 6,000 on the second. :gonk:

My friend is also somewhat worried: his name is on the deed too.

Last year for a summer job I was working for a contractor doing renovations. Our main project was a huge house in northern Toronto. Three stories, huge indoor pool, interlocking brick driveway, four-car garage, etc. On a half-acre lot - the land itself would have been worth millions.

The people living there were really nice; they offered me beer while I was working :p

Man, that sucks. A half-acre lot is worth millions there?

We've got 82 acres just because we felt like it. We're not even rich or anything.

I doubt you have 82 acres in a city. Land in the city is more expensive than land in the country.

It sucks...that land is more expensive in the city..such that 1/2 acre (a small area)...costs millions of dollars.

That is a pretty big apartment. Not counting the balcony, my 2 bed and 2 bath apartment weighs in at ~960 sq ft.

Do you have any idea how much they paid for that house?? A house that size around here would probably be worth $10 - $30 million depending on location.....
2009-07-08, 7:21 PM #23
There's a 140 acre lot about a mile from me selling for 7 million.

Of course, it's an intact trapezoidal lot which already has county approval to be subdivided. But still. That's 50k an acre.

All I can say without risking the promised bullet in my head, is that $10mil is WAY over what they got it for. Like 7 times more. And they got it way less than what the guy was asking for it.

I did some server/website work for a local guy around here last year during xmas. He didn't own this house, his friend did, but he ran his business out of it.

This house wasn't huge, I'd guess about 4k sq/ft. But it was sweet, indoor pool, backs right up to a river with a boat dock, nice garage, sweet foyer, living room with a fireplace in the middle. Very nice. Unfortunately it hadn't been updated since the 70's. And the guy "living" there didn't take care of the place. It wasn't furnished and the heater wasn't turned on.

My best friend's girlfriend's family owns Jockey (underwear, shirts, apparel, etc). I go to their house frequently and it is quite amazing. Plasma screens everywhere (with a big pull down projector as well), inground pool and spa, 20-25 ft ceilings, basement as large as my parents house, the works

Thing is, with a ginormous house, you're somewhat compelled to be throwing parties or having guests over all the time, no?

I asked him if they looked at what the utilities were like. He said no. I can't imagine the electric bill. Especially now when it's so flipping hot down here in Arkansas.

PICS!
Was back there last night. You'll notice right away that I can't take a picture to save my life. And most of them are missing some sense of scale. But here's the tour (more or less):

The front gate has to be opened from within upon entry, but has a sensor somewhere and opens automatically when exiting. Spooky cool.

It was hard to find a good shot of the front of the house because of the trees. This was as good as it got.

Front porch with ugly chandelier that belongs in a horror movie. On a cool note, it's motorized and can raise and lower by pushing a button to change bulbs.

The main room. There was a 15-20 foot statue in the fountain, but it was hideous and the previous owners took it. There are doors in the back to help get a sense of scale.

One wall of the main/great room. Lots of shelves...

Part of the upstairs kitchen. 3 ovens, a warmer, 2 dishwashers, ice maker, trash compactor, toys!

One side of the library/study. Don't know where the picture went.

Part of the master bedroom. The arched ceiling inset with angels... will be the first thing painted over... the ladies closet is bigger than my kitchen. So is the men's closet.

Part of the master bath. The jacuzzi bath. There's 2 toilets, each in a separate room, a few sinks, etc. There's 2 other jacuzzi's in the house.

It works bidet or binight. There's 2 other bidets in the house too. Can I play in the water?

The exercise room with mirrors on every wall. No, no mirrors on the ceiling.

The pool! Wee!

The adjoining sauna...

You can take the stairs down to the other floor, or just ride the elevator.

The other kitchen. All the rock came from the property.

The winecellar, which can hold a lot of wine, apparently. What you're seeing is a fake wall pulled aside to reveal the 5 foot safe.

Almost done. Here's the boat dock out back. Probably 50 yards from the house.

View of the lake and our local nuclear plant... 0.o

And a boat to use with the above 2 pics! I think I'm riding on it tomorrow.

Here's a question: When you have that much stuff, is any of it worth anything to you anymore?
