Going in for surgery

I'm having a minor op on Friday morning to remove a rather painful cyst, and part of it involves going under general anaesthesia. I'm sure some people here have gone through that before, what's it like? I realise it's not a huge operation but the anaesthesia bit is making me a bit apprehensive and I'd like to know what I'm getting myself in to. What I can expect to feel like afterwards, for example.

It's mostly the list of side effects I've read in a leaflet about general anaesthetic I was given. Such as one of the "not very common" side effects simply labelled "Death" :P

i wish i had gotten anaesthesia when i got my wisdom tooth pulled out

What's it like to receive general anesthesia? For me, nothing really. It takes a bit to really wake up from it. But there isn't much of an "experience" to talk about when going into it.

I heard people talking but couldn't open my eyes. Thought I was dreaming because it takes moments to realize what is really happening.

If it's not a major surgery you shouldn't feel too crappy afterwards. I usually felt nauseous / tired. The other things I felt were because of the operation and not the anesthesia. One thing, though ... for some reason it always hurts like hell (burns) when the stuff is first going into my veins. Apparently that doesn't always happen to everyone. So I dunno. It doesn't really matter cuz you're out 3-5 seconds after that anyways.

I did have an unpleasant surprise once when I woke up and discovered I had a tube in my dick (urine bag connected directly to my bladder).

It's not 100% certain, but if you're healthy and don't have any allergies to narcotics or sedatives, you'll do fine. It's not like they'll just pump you full of drugs, the amount of anesthetics is carefully calculated to bring you under and maintained during the procedure. Anesthesia mainly becomes a problem for weakened patients or morbidly obese patients. You'll go under before you realize it, and wake up mostly pain free.

It'll take a while to get the grogginess from you when you wake up. You'll feel so tired you'll feel like you can't even lift your head. So tired in fact you may wake up once and go immediately back to sleep, and not even remember it. You'll probably want a drink, cause the aftertaste of the oxygen and such is pretty nasty. Other than that, it's actually pretty peaceful, especially for a short surgery. Longer ones can be a bit more annoying.

I was put under anesthesia when I got my tonsils taken out back in 5th grade. It's kinda cool, literally just make you pass out. It might make you sick though when you come back out of it.

Thanks for the information and well wishes, guys. I'm sure it'll be fine, I'm mostly just wondering how I'm going to be spending my Friday! Sound asleep, it looks like :P

Basically I was talking to the anesthesiologist in the OR, and the next thing I knew the surgery was over and I was in a different room.

Dry mouth, a little nausiated, and you might have a taste in your mouth for a week, but I'm willing to bet they've improved things since I was last under. Suck on ice, and it usually helps with the throat, headaches and nausia of anesthesia.

Just remember, it's better with the anesthesia than without!
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

honestly, it's a piece of piss. I had a morning operation and I was out by 11am, I would have been able to go back to work that same morning if it weren't for their guidelines and an inconvenient surgical wound.

5 seconds of total euphoria, and then the best sleep you'll ever have.

Everyone reacts differently but i would expect a bit of lightheaded-ness for a minute or two and a little bit of vertigo when you stand up. After you walk out of the building you'll still feel kind of out of it, like you just woke up from a long nap, but much better then you were initially.

I wouldn't worry yourself to death over the side effects. If you ever look at any prescription drugs they're about the same. Look at the bright side, if you die, what better way to go then sleeping?? haha j/k. You'll be fine dude.

I had a cyst removed. Woke up in the middle of the surgery. Looked over. Saw my wrist bones exposed. Had a conversation with the surgeon.

It was two-stage anethesia (Happy pill that makes you sleep, then the numbing stuff) so I didn't feel anything at all. Still, if I hadn't still be high out of my mind from the happy pill...

****. I just made myself want to go be a druggy.

Laser Hair Removal isn't a surgery. It's in the office with a young hot hippy doctor who always ignorantly flirts with everyone because she only has 2 male patients. I'm lucky I get to lay on my stomach. The other guy has medical stitchings so he needs a full body treatment, and I don't know how he maintains composure for an hour and a half with her smiles and jokes and warm hands.

One of the benefits of diabetes is that because I can't eat before the surgery, I'm guaranteed first place in the morning (barring emergencies and other diabetics, I guess). I'm looking to be out by lunch time, hopefully.

It's interesting reading the different viewpoints on it, thankfully most of them seem to be erring towards "slight discomfort", which is totally worth it to get rid of this thing. From the leaflets they hand out it's like you're going to spend the rest of the day throwing up and passing out. If I'm going to have the hangover I want to have the alcohol first!

Luckily, mine's on my back, so if I wake up I'll only be able to see the floor :P

Well, everyone reacts differently. Your state of mind going in is important too. Have faith in your doctors and give in like you did when you were a kid. Go with the flow and remain as passive and agreeable as possible, and the lack of panic will make your treatment work very effectively, and you'll wake up pleasantly too. It's almost always a really fast and dreamless sleep for me, but some people feel really deep long sleep full of vivid dreams.

It's probably changed since I had it 15 years ago but I remember vomiting. Oh boy, there was loads of vomiting despite having gone without food for 24 hrs. And my legs were still numb and useless when I woke up. The first time I went to puke I sat up, tried to push myself off the bed in the hope of reaching the bathroom 10 feet from me. Instead I hit the deck and puked all over the floor.
Just ask for a bowl :P

Nausea is the most common side effect, but it is just a side effect. It does not happen in everyone. Oftentimes, if they think you will get nauseated, they will even give you strong medicine for it before you wake up.

Although there's a chance that'll be me come Friday afternoon, I laughed. Thanks :P

Again, thanks for everyone's input. I know it's going to be fine, I'm just at that stage where I wish it was done already. Still, not long to go now.

Honestly, the time between finding a suddenly massive testicle and getting a diagnosis was a lot more stressful than waiting for the operation :p

I've gone under for several ops, mostly dental in nature. For my wisdom teeth they got me the good stuff. Count backwards from 10, didn't get past 8. When I woke up, I wasn't self-aware yet, my parents said I kept repeating myself until I came around :P

Thought you guys would like to know that the surgery went really well. The anaesthesia was actually pretty cool; it was basically my off switch for the rest of the day. I didn't react badly to it at all and I could fall asleep whenever I wanted. To be quite honest, with how I feel today, I'd quite welcome another hit!

I've gone under general anesthesia 4 times.

It's the weirdest thing ever. One second, you're sitting there counting backwards from 10 (you might hit 6 if you're lucky), and the next, you're waking up and the operation is over. So weird.

Or you'll hit 10, the doctors will look at eachother frantically, before one realizes they never turned the anesthetic on.

Yes, that's happened to me.

I once had the sides of my toenial removed, all the way back to the start of the nail. I sat and watched as he pumped my toe full of numbing stuff, then proceeded to stick a small metal spatula all the way under my toenail bamboo-chute style and cut off the sides.

I've gone under twice. Once to repair a broken Metacarpal bone in my right hand & once to cut out all of my wisdom teeth (about 10+ years overdue). One of the times they gave me a shot in the shoulder & told be to count backwards from 10. I remember saying 7. When I woke, I was so disoriented that I couldn't even make it to the bathroom alone. A nurse had a pull my pants down for me. The other time was "laughing gas". It was slower but much less stressful. It was more like waking from a long sleep. I wasn't confused, other than waking up in a room that I'd never been in before.
? :)
