Owl City / Ben Gibbard impostor

So on iTunes the #2 album right now is from 'Owl City.'- Go take a listen to some of it's music...Go ahead, I'll wait...

Okay, you listened?

I listen to a bunch of the samples and realized that it must be a new side project from Ben Gibbard. It makes sense- I'd never heard of Owl City before, so it must be SOMEONE'S side project right? Wrong. Owl City has nothing to do with Ben Gibbard (Lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service)

What pisses me off is that everyone is claiming this album is best thing since sliced bread- Owl City (Adam Young) writes lyrics and sings EXACTLY like Ben Gibbard (with a little more electronic tone on his vocals during post) has been doing for YEARS. I am listening to the Owl City tracks again, and I honestly CANNOT tell the difference between this guys voice and Gibbard's. They aren't similar- they are just about exact. One might argue that this is new because it's electronic, but that's what The Postal Service was- Ben Gibbard singing over electronica!

...am I crazy, or does anyone else see this?

Google says he's a myspace guy whose hit the big-time.

So I'm guessing he started off as a Gibbard fan, did his best to sound like his idol and tripped over a bag of money landing face first in over-night fame.
Maybe he'll find his own voice, or maybe he'll just keep going where Gibbard (going by that article, I don't know anything about the dude) left off.

Singers that sound the same is new? Maybe to indie music, but probably 90% of pop music has guys that all sound the same.

Edit: Just listened to him on iTunes, I don't think he sounds like Ben Gibbard at all except maybe for a few inflections.

Yes, when I first heard Owl City on our local radio station, I could have sworn it was a new Postal Service song. He really does sound EXACTLY like Ben Gibbard. But hey, that just means he, too, has a great voice. He may be trying to sound similar to Ben Gibbard, but he does a great job at it. Don't put him down because of it. At least he's out there doing what he loves to do.

If you Google 'owl city ben gibbard' this is the first link that comes up.

I did it myself cos I too thought Gibbard had a new side-project.

Yeah, I heard that song in the car the other day, and I thought it was him, but it turned out I was wrong. They sound like they could be twins.

SAJN you're 100% right except for the part where you CARE SO DAMN MUCH. Srsly, why is it such a big deal that this band sounds like The Postal Service?

(Also, overall, I think I like Owl City better.)
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

They sound alike, but what does it matter when both of their music is trash?
