Grrr.... net Nanny Must die!

I'm living in a retirment home in toronto that has recently opened a few floors to students... up on the 15th floor they have two computers with the net, and since i don't have the net in my room, i come up here...

but they have friggin net nanny installed and it's pissing me off. It censors words that even SOUND offensive... In fact, Massassi is censored, All i see is ########. GAHHHHH

I tried to go to friggin Obi's thread here about his magazines and Net Nanny would not let me in and made IE close down on me because the thread contained many uses of ###, Gay, homosexual and other "banned" words. I did manage to get into the topic by going to the task manager and shutting it off, but the damn thing came back up and when i tried to get to page two of the topic it did not let me... Chances are i won't even be able to read this topic once i Post it due to the fact it has ### in it!

Granted, it's an old folks home, but why do they need net ####### nanny? wanna block the old folks from their pron surfing? WTF.

Anyone have a way to get rid of net Nany 5.0? it's super pissing me off.

I dont know how netnanny works but it could function as a proxy. Try checking

Tools>Internet Options>Connection>LAN Settings

If the "Use proxy" box is checked and the address is localhost or 127.0.0.1 then uncheck it.

Also, you could try removing it from startup (if you have access.)

Why would a retirement home even have net nanny? That's for freakin children!

I hate how society treats elderly people like little kids.

By what ever reasoning, I can access this thread, but not Obi's or even one of kirby's threads down the forum... WTF.

I've done some research on the computer here and found that net nanny does not use proxy, if it did i could use a CGI script on countless sites to get around, and I don have admin access on this computer... (took about 20 min to get myself an account with admin access... Win XP is easy to get around)

anywho, I did use some of the methods to try disabling it from some sites, but they did not work, must be for older versions, and i did go to msconfig and disable it from the startup, but then once you start up you get error messages poping up "WARNING, NET NANNY FAILED TO EXECUTE, PLEASE CHECK YOUR SETTINGS AND RESTART THE COMPUTER" or some #### like that, one you try getting it to go away, net nanny somehow manages to start herself back up...GAh.

if it was just for blocking "bad" sites, I would not mind, but this is rediculus when i can't access thread that are harmless like on Massassi here, I'm even under the impression that it has a key logger function and can see what yopu've been typing and keeps logs of sites you have tried to access... it's a friggin invasion of privacy if ya ask me... and a nusienace (omg... spelling, gah)

you do know what knoppix is, right? (it's a form of linux that can be run off of a cd w/o leaving any traces of itself on the hard drive. Since it loads at boot time and it is a completely different OS especially, net nanny will not be a problem with knoppix, i guarantee it.

Well, I found out that to get the password, if you have forgotten it, you can do soemthing to get a special code, then email this code to them and they then decrypt it and send it back... I can get the code... I just need a way to get it decrypted and a password out of it.

77OFFFLFNOUI

was the password sting they gave me to email them... i have no itention o emailing it to them really... but still, if someone knows the format or something... it possible somone here could get it.(it's random tho, so it changes each time you do it.)

Why not ask the nursing home if you can get around it, because it's annoying you? Seriously, why would they object?

Well, for starts, The people at the desk, Don't know jack #### about what goes on, they just open the damn door, and it's hard as hell to track down the IT person, they are rarely in, some guy comes, installs and goes away, if there is trouble, he comes in...

plus they won't... why do you think it's here in the first place... To stop #### and bad words... disabling it would get rid of that for them... i've tried talking to some people downstairs and it's gotten me nowhere

It took me three minutes to figure out how to disable Net Nanny...

Granted, it took 5 months and a reformat to get the bugger program off my computer.

And to make a long story short, I can't help you because I think it was 4, and I'm not willing to let that insect back onto my computer to play with again.

So... now the old folks are being treated like children? Another reason for me to die at 40, besides inevitable lung cancer. IF I live past 40, one of yo uguys hunt me down and kill me.

And I don't see why old people can't see cuss words. Although I'm fairly sure that the forums also may censor certain things, but I'm not sure about that either. Besides, old folks should be allowed to swear all they want, and read it all they want. They deserve it.

I used INTERNET to find this stuff.

Other methods to disable NetNanny
Saruman goes on to describe several methods of disabling NetNanny (for example, by disabling it from the Win.ini file), and how to crack the software to break the 30 days evaluation limit. But the most interesting discovery is that NetNanny has a backdoor - an administrator password that always unlocks NetNanny. By entering ~frontdoor as the password, any user can disable NetNanny without having to do anything further.

The problem is, I think Net nanny caught onto that, cause the program on my computer does not have the file in question that needs to be decrypted.

Well, when you need to... satisfy yourself, there's a whole building full of grannys right at your browsing fingertips, and no waiting for anything to buffer, either. Just a crank on the oxygen and hotwire the heart-monitor. Net nanny is no longer a problem.
