Finally built my i7 machine today :awesome: After some initial difficulty mainly due to my own stupidity (I didn't connect the ATX power connector to the mobo properly so it didn't POST and I started freaking out for 5 hours), it's running smoooth and freakin awesome now :awesome:

Pics + other nerdy stuff soon.

Building new computers bums me out, because it doesnt take 6 months before it's inferior again.

Hello from my old computer! What fancy gadgets and gizmos do you have in the future? Can you view full-color pictures yet!? What about something smaller than an 8-inch floppy drive for storage?

Hello from my new HP Pavilion dv7t!
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Haha yeah true, but I generally don't need/want the best of the best just for the sake of it ... as long as it can still perform near the level it was at (relative to itself) when I got it with newer apps, I'll still be happy.

Anyways, just finished overnight Prime and is now stable at 3.3Ghz w/ stock volts and good temps :D Yay for pseudo-i7-975!

Quick specs:
i7 920 @ 3.3Ghz
6GB DDR3 1600 running at 1333 (because the ram can't run at its rated specs -_- haha)
WD Black 640
eVGA GTX 260 216
Sweetass ABS Mechanical Keyboard :awesome:
$10 MS Mouse
Antec Mini p180 case

Total came out to ~$1000

That's a nice setup, I can say so because it's very similar to the one I've been planning for yonks now. Sadly I've gotten it into my head to wait for the release of the next gen of graphics cards and USB 3 so it might be a while before I have it... to put it mildly :\

You ought to try overclocking the processor a bit more if you have a 3rd-party CPU cooler on it. Should get up to, say, 3.8GHz without any trouble.

Sweet. What are you working on out there?

I just got my c2duo setup running, and man is it schmexy. About to upgrade from an e7400 to an e8400, from 2gb to 4gb of ram, and from an 8800GT to a 4870. Just waiting on parts.

Also fixed my klipsch promedia setup and upgraded from a 22" vga no-name (envision) widescreen LCD to a 24" hdmi/dvi samsung widescreen lcd (t240). Needless to say I consistently feel like having sex with my monitor.

Can't wait to get those upgrades though, hoping ghostbusters runs a bit better.

I remember when I used to care about overclocking and memory timings and all that crap, lol.

I just finished a new build this weekend. I'm not rich enough to afford an i7 unfortunately.

Old system:

AMD 64 3000+
6600 GT w128 megs RAM
2 Gigs DDR 400 RAM
80 Gig HDD
New System:

AMD Phenom II X3 720
GTX 260 w/896 megs RAM
4 Gigs DDR2 1066 RAM
640 Gig HDD

Overall a nice upgrade from what I was using. :)
Life is beautiful.

I was planning on going w/ that setup for the longest time but ended up just switching out the proc/platform to i7

http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/20/asus-p6x58-premium-motherboard-arrives-complete-with-usb-3-0-por/

I know I have a looot more OC headroom than 3.3, but I don't really need it atm ... I just wanted to run it at 3.3 to make it equal a 975. I'm planning on OCing some more over the years as it becomes more necessary.

Zan: I actually gave my camera to someone else atm so no pics yet :(

I read about the P6X58 Premium around the start of June when it was on display at some show or other... but I'm not sold on it yet. It uses a 3rd-party controller (made by NEC) for the USB 3 support. The controller is connected via PCI Express 1x which would, to me, miss the whole point of the additional speed you could get by going from USB 2 to USB 3. Plus if I wanted PCI-Express-1x-based USB 3 I'd just buy my motherboard now and then get one of the inevitable PCIe add-on cards that will eventually be released.

I'd rather see USB 3 support "properly" built into the southbridge. Which I fear might not happen for a while.
