MoTS on Vista?
2009-07-23, 5:20 PM #1
Vista is refusing to let me install MoTS, and I've tried the usual compatibility mode tricks...is there any way to make it work on Vista?

(This is especially confounding because I got Jedi Knight installed straightaway with no problems.)

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Cool a new guy.
There is a way to manual install it on JKhub, but I lost the link.

Assuming MotS has a 16-bit installer, 16-bit support was removed from 64-bit Windows by Microsoft. So it's partly their fault, but LucasArts (and others) had no business deploying 16-bit code for 32-bit systems. It was just lazy reuse of old installer code.

And so, so many other people did too. Yes it does.
Even if he is only running 32 bit (Which i see from installing JK just fine) That article would help him bypass the installer, I just can't find it.

Is this what you guys are going on about?

Yes, That should work for MoTS too.

Hmm. I followed the article and made sure all the files weren't read only, etc.

Then I click to start and a black screen shows up with "ERR_CANNOT_LOAD_FILE_[string of chinese characters]"

Damn, was so hopeful lol

Sorry, just bumping this...mainly as I can't find it on the discussion thread page, and I figure it's hard to respond to something nobody can see :P

Someone here will eventually help. It takes time. Welcome new guy.

"ERR_CANNOT_LOAD_FILE [string of chinese characters]" is pretty odd. I'd suspect either an uninitialized string or MotS is trying to directly print an ASCII filename into UTF-16.

You should try running MotS again with the /debug log command line switch and post he resulting debug.log file.

Thanks! I know it does, but when I couldn't find the thread myself I started to wonder :P

And yeah, I've been a loyal Massassi-visitor for *ages*, but lately I've been getting the hankering to get back into the classics and see about getting into MP again...thus my sadness with MoTS not installing.

I think I'm going to need some explanation of how to do that, it's a new concept to me :)

Also, this is the error I got (finally got a working screencap): [http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp326/Basileis_2008/motserror.jpg]

I get the same problem when I tried it on my brothers computer. I dont have a solution as of yet but I will let you know if I figure it out.

run "jk.exe /debug log"

A screenshot isn't going to do it, I need the ASCII text from the log to figure out what is actually going on.

(The error happens before it loads jkstrings.uni, which means it's probably a corrupt GOB or it's bombing out while loading jkstrings.uni itself)

Should I do this with jkm.exe or sith.exe?

Moreover, I tried it with jkm and it either pops up the same error screen or won't let me include the command to log. (I'm using the basic Windows run window for this.) It either tells me it's nonexistant or a syntax error.

(Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here.)

I'm sorry, I can't. I just can't. If someone else explains this next step to you I'll be more than happy to pick up where I left off.

Umm, ok. As I said, I might be missing something obvious, and I'm sorry for that if I am. Could be I just am not noticing something in your explanation for whatever reason.

Not trying to be stupid. At any rate, I begin to wonder if there's a difference between trying this overall trick in Program Files x86 (where all the other lucasarts stuff went, and worked) and the normal Program Files directory.

make a batch file in the directory

in it put:

jkm.exe /debug log.txt

open log.txt

tell us what it says

Hmm....well, that's weird.

It doesn't exist long enough to say anything. A window pops up, just displays the directory line ending in /debug log.txt then immediately collapses.
2009-08-07, 11:05 PM #22
Is there a log.txt file in your mots directory after you run it? If so, you should open it, copy what it says, and post it here.

Nope, no log.txt, using *either* permutation. Even tried to see if Windows made it a hidden file.

The result of the debug log attempt is either the same instantly-disappearing window or (I played around with how it was written) the same error screen I posted earlier.

A theory, though. I've transferred over everything from the disc as the instructions from jkhub said (and made sure they weren't read only)...but the disc still thinks it's not installed. Perhaps it's that disconnect?

Still can't figure out why jk runs just fine but mots won't. Makes no sense to me at all.

Have you cross-posted this on JKHub too?
