New Announcement Concering Picture Size

I've posted a new announcement about the number of high-resolution images we've seen lately that have been breaking the tables. Please read the announcement and follow the guidelines posted within.

The People For the Ethical Treatment of 56kers (PET56K) would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I've heard rumors that The Ancient Cult of the 15 Inch Monitor users have resurfaced to give The Massassi Temple another chance.

I don't like it. If the thread is concerning high resolution images, then there's no reason to resize them IMHO. If someone randomly posts a 1280x1024 pic on a text discussion, then that should be resized, but it doesn't make sense to limit resolution on threads that are image-heavy anyways.
2004-08-25, 5:46 AM #7
Indeed. If you mention in the thread subject or in the first post that there will be high-res images, then it should be OK. That is, if the original author of the thread wants to allow high-res images, it's kind of strange to restrict their use in that particular, specific occasion (thread).

That's even worse than resizing, what kind of solution is that?

It's a rule and you obey it. Sounds pretty simple.

800 is tiny. I think it should be 1024..

I havent noticed any side scrolling though :P The solution is to run at a decent resolution.

I seriously don't see what the problem is with linking an image. So you have to click on a link instead of it being there already for you. It's really no big deal.

But it's even worse when it's text...

I approve of our new small image ruling though.

It is not under development anymore and there are other free viewers around

I always try to keep my images as thumbnails and links when I'm doing in-game shots, or something like that. But I'm not really going to check if my image is going to make the thread scroll unless it's a text thread, and I'm posting something funny. In my own threads, I'll post the size that I think fits. Usually that's thumbnails, or small images, anyway.

Oh, and post your [picture, desktop] etc threads shouldn't have to follow this rule. A 56ker isn't going to be able to handle opening each individual link, anyway. And this will signifigently slow down cable users, as we'll have to individually load each and every picture, rather than all at once.

I'm pretty sure you guys are getting more uptight about discussing/questioning the rules than the admins are!

If I were to leave Massassi, it would be because of the unfriendly environment, not because of the rules that I follow even if I don't agree with them.* However there's just way too many cool people here, they more than balance out the ******* .

Scenario

Problem: Some text-discussion threads get ruined when people randomly throw up huge images.

Solution: Ban all large images.

Connection Problem: ???????

Mini-MODs 1-6: I AM THE LAW!

This especially doesn't make sense for the showcase forum.

*Never been banned.

Connection Problem, you have remember that the problem isnt only table breaking, but bandwidth as well. Not everyone on a 56k connection wants to wait for high res images to load.

There are plenty of forums that have this rule, and things arent any worse off for it.

Not having this rule apply to the showcase forum, or letting people who start threads (such as desktop threads) might be a good idea though. We could also enforce a (56k warning) in the topic rule for image-heavy threads in the discussion forum, something which other forums do and seems to work out well. Let me know what you think about these ideas, and if you have any of your own, feel free to post them.

Ok, I've updated the announcement. The showcase forum is exempt from this rule, and thread starters may declare their thread exempt as long as they include a (56k Warning) label somewhere in the topic.

Just please dont take advantage of these exemptions by posting images that are crazily huge, like 2000 pixels across. Anything that is deemed as just plain obnoxious by the admins will still be edited out.

This is a great and happy medium. I think this will improve the forums overall. More 56kers posting on threads that they formerly would not. Believe it or not, those people aren't all that bad, once you get passed the lag issues ;-)
