Explain to me why DD/MM/YYYY is "superior" than MM/DD/YYYY. I know the metric system makes more sense and easier to calculate than the U.S. customary system, but, when it comes to date formats, it boils down to personal preference mostly, no?

I don't think any is really "superior," but I think DD/MM/YYYY makes more sense because I think they're ordered in terms of importance. More than likely you'll know the month, and assuredly you'll know what year you're in, so the most important thing to know is the day, so that comes first. I don't really know the reasons behind the formats, but that's how I feel towards it.

TAKES HINTS JUST FINE, STILL DOESN'T CARE

Every day in the morning when I wake up, I like to think of the month first since nobody in 20 years is going to care about what day it was. Or, you know, care.

Then again, in 200 years nobody's gonna care about what month it was. [Joke repetition]

But why is MM/DD/YYYY superior to DD/MM/YYYY? The only defense I've seen for it around here was Rob's "It's AMERICAN" which of course is an unbeatable argument.

I guess the Swedes win with their YYYY/MM/DD, though. Well, usually they just win with their DDs.

I find MM/DD/YYYY to have an advantage when it comes to sorting dates. Although I think YYYY/MM/DD would be the best for sorting. When you sort dates, you want to sort by year then month then date. DD/MM/YYYY has it backwards.

Bingo. It's more accurate, and looks and sounds far more impressive than the others.

In writing, Day Month Year works as well, ala 03 August 2009 because it further separates the digits. 03Aug2009, or something.

YMD is awesome for file sorting, I've got a couple years' worth of spreadsheets in one directory and that's the fastest way to find a given file.

I tend to use DMY a lot now, especially in source code.

DD/MM/YYYY makes more sense to me seeing as the units get larger as you read across, I'd therefore say it's better for organising dates.

I suppose YYYY/MM/DD would make more sense, and it'd be just like your mileometer/gas meter/electricity meter. :P
nope.

I always use YYYY/MM/DD for sorting purposes. Also, no one ever does YYYY/DD/MM, so there's no confusion.

This. Both MM/DD/YYYY and DD/MM/YYYY piss me off to no end.

05/06/2009 ... what is it? May 06? June 05? GAH!!!

Even worse is MM/DD/YY. You have to be a special kind of evil to use that format.

In a hundred years, history students will be puzzling over what terrible event happened on the 9th of November 2001.

That's only if the history books refer to it as 9/11. :P September 11th, 2001 will probably be the more proper recording. In which case I guess kyle90 is writing our history books.

I wished we used more of dd/mm/yy in the US, but I'm so used to reading it as mm/dd/yy that it's just how I write it

Why make weeks 7 days when it would make the calenders a lot cleaner if there were 5 days in a week?

I think that issue should be resolved first. Then we can address date format.

Personally, I prefer YYYYMMDD.HH

Where HH represents a 24 hour clock.

Double-this. Seriously, people, in this case at least, ISO is teh sex.

The department I work for has clients from the US, Great Britain, Australia, and Europe, and damned if they can ever agree on a format. We've had more than a few things get totally mis-scheduled due to MM/DD/YY-type assumptions on one side or another. h88

Personally I like the format of: DDMMMYY
ie:

04AUG09
28SEP09
14MAR09

etc..

Easy to get used to, easy to read, and you get the day first, but there's no confusion between day to month.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I was a TA for a prof that demanded we use YYYY/DD/MM formats for files. I tried to defy him, but he wrote me a long email explaining why his way was superior in the world of Computer Science and how it wasn't my fault I wasn't a CS major and wouldn't know, blah, blah, blah...so instead of arguing, I just gave in. :carl:

I realized that I speak DD/MM/YYYY too: The 17th of July, 2004. Somehow, I never really noticed that people did it MM/DD/YYYY but I've always subconsciously converted it. Usually, all of my computer stuff is set up my way, but all of my school/work stuff is set up the other way, and I've never actually recognized the obvious conversion I make. I copy my schedule onto the computer flawlessly without noticing it until just now, going off of just numbers.

I've never heard of anyone claiming one form was 'superior' to the other.
I just think it'd be best if we had a universal system, that way when anyone on the internet says that on 01/02/10 they're going to headbutt Will Smith on live tv, we all know when to tune in.

We DO have a universal system, the US just hasn't adopted it yet. Like the metric system.

Well, the 9th of November 1989 was when the Berlin Wall came down, so "9/11" could reasonably refer to that event too.

dd/mm/yyyy simply cause it is in order by lengths of time, but yyyy/mm/dd for sorting things by date.

I hate systems (usually digital cameras) that don't allow me to change the date format.
