Improving framerate in Day of Defeat
2004-08-27, 10:20 AM #1
I've been playing DoD a bit lately, and I've been noticing my framerate is really atrocious for it. I'm averaging around 35fps just walking around, but when other players are around me or I get into a firefight it drops to as low as 13fps. I know this is not the type of performance I should be getting on a 9600XT with a 6 year old engine. If anyone could give me some sort of tweak guide or some setting to change this I'd appreciate it.

I was playing on a server with 24 players and a ping of 80. My framerate was going into the lower teens when I spawned near my teammates.

Oh, and OpenGL.

go into the config file for dod... find this line

ati_npatch "1.0"

change it to 0.0 and see if that helps... alternatively you can set truform to always off under opengl settings in the control panel

if it's already off then i wouldn't know

Steam ran like **** on OpenGL with my 9600XT. Go with Direct3D. A benefit of this is, at long distances, you can see people through walls. Makes sniping easier. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Jim, that helped a little bit, but I still get framerates as low as 30, and on donner or any map with rain I'm still getting in the teens. Direct3D didn't show much of a difference.

Do you have Catalyst 3.8 or 3.9 Beta?
2004-08-27, 11:46 AM #9
4.8s, but even with the older drivers it was the same.

I have a little NVidia Vanta and my framerate's not been too bad. I just have to close out some stuff to get my CPU resources going. I at first thought it was that my card couldn't handle it, but after I started ending some processes in task manager it helped IMMENSELY!

Go back to the 4.7's or get the 4.9 betas. I've heard bad things about the 4.8s.

GO WITH D3D! OpenGL on a 9600XT is...not...good. Especially if you're running at 1600x1200, with any AA or AF on.

Believe it or not, DoD is THE most demanding HL mod that I know of. Maybe Natural Selection's more demanding. It's a beautiful mod, but like I said, demanding. It could be besting you if you have AA or AF on.

Search through the sticky threads on the DoD forums. There are a couple of articles on tweaks for just your situation.
