Slight change to allowed screen names when registering...

I added "gg" to the list of phrases that are not allowed in new screen names when registering for the forums. I noticed that at least one of the automated spambot programs uses the prefix "gg" and then a number when registering forum accounts, and this should keep that particular bot from being able to register in the future.

Sorry if this causes any inconvenience to any new members. If you absolutely have to have "gg" in your nick, then register a different name and contact an admin and we'll change it for you.

Poor future massassians, Maggy and Peggy. etc.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Personally, I'd just tweak the registration HTML form and backend form code to change the names of the POST variables, the idea being to block bots that just target any vBulletin forum. Additionally and optionally, if the backend gets old variables, have it add a DENY line to .htaccess for the source IP, problem solved.

This never works. These are not bots that are registering, or if they are, they're really, really good at CAPTCHAs and even special made questions.

Yeah, spam companies have taken to hiring people in third world countries who do nothing but register user accounts on message boards all day.

Could we have every new member to submit a personal answer to a question? Something simple like "What was your first video game?"

Well then the "Bot" could just insert anything, or a random video game from times past.

I tried making money with that. Eventually gave up after I only had $2 racked up after doing it for 4 days.
