What do you clean the fretboard with?

I just got a new guitar, and I want to keep it in good shape. I know you're supposed to wipe down the strings after each playing, but with what? Can I just use an old shirt or something?

a good thing to do would be to ask at your local guitar shop and they can suggest some string cleaning stuff that you really should use only occasionally but for after every playing an old shirt will do

Ya, old shirt is good but they make specialty cloths for a reason... mainly because they'll get the dust/oil off better. They'll put you out maybe $3 at the most.

Mineral oil, lemon oil will work. An old t-shirt works BETTER than the special clothes IMO, unless I've just gotten some really crappy cloths.

Personally, I don't even clean my fretboards. Or my strings. Or my guitar. *shrug* Whatever.

Yeah, me neither. For a while I had wood primer all over it. I was painting my neighbor's house and forgot to wash my hands.

My model isn't in this picture, but it's basically identical to one of those.

I've been told to de-string the guitar and use steel wool. Use an old shirt to clean the strings themselves.

yea, why be so demanding about using no pick? it seems like your not using one just to be different...

I tend to only fingerpick with my fingers, I use the pick for shredding and chords and stuff.

I don't clean my guitar because it's not much better when it's clean, but when I get my next guitar and spend a bit of cash on it I'll clean that one, esp because it'll be black [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I can name a few: Paco de Lucia, NiƱo de Pura, Pepe Romero, Alexandre Lagoya, ...

Plus they all can do AMAZING stuff pick players can't, like PLAYING 2 NOTES AT ONCE.

...Who says we can't? I can't recall a time where I couldn't do octave harmonies, or thirds, or fifths. it's called muting.

and also, who said pick players can't use their fingers at the same time?.

Nobody's slighting your musical ability, but you have to realize that there's a ton of stuff you just can't do with the pick. It's more than just wanking on power chords; listen to any of the artists Tenshu mentioned. It doesn't matter how good you are, that stuff impossible unless you use your fingernails.

Tracer, I know that, but using a pick doesn't mean we only play single notes [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Oh, and I have no reason to feel attacked anyway, sorry if it came off this way.

Also, I know guitar's a lot more than wanking on power chords, as you put it. Besides, I can't begin to describe how much I love Ottmar Liebert's work, a player whose playing also falls in the spanish/classical guitar department.

There's plenty of things that are impossible without a pick as well.

I think it's important to be skilled using a pick as well as without one. I've been playing with a pick for five years, and I've just started learning some fingerstyle stuff. It's fun, but satisfying in a different way than it is playing electric with a pick and some gain. Depends on what kinda mood I'm in I guess. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Ditto. Let's not have that discussion here.

Tracer: you and I are like musical SOULMATES. We should get married in Vegas, and have kids with long, LONG fingernails (like the guy from Mortal Kombat).

I heard of Ottmar, but haven't had the chance to really listen yet. I'll be sure to check it out.

Anyway, Tenshu signing off. Ciao.
