Doom 3 Troubles
2004-08-27, 2:02 PM #1
As most of your know, I recently purchased Doom 3. As of a couple days after I started playing it, I've kept on having random crashes to the desktop whenever in-game. Sometimes the
game will just crash and everything will go black and then to a blank blue screen. I notice after the desktop crash, everything runs really slow, especially scrolling in my browser. And after rebooting after a blue screen crash, my desktop takes FOREVER to load up. Now not only is this happening with Doom 3, but pretty much any other game I go to play (DoD, CoD, Far Cry, etc.). I'm pretty sure it all started with Doom 3 though because I was not experiencing any of these problems until I installed it. Any help would be appreciated, my system specs are below:

Athlon XP 2100+
1GB PC3200 RAM
Radeon 9600XT 128MB (currently running the catalyst 4.9 beta drivers)

Did you upgrade your drivers for Doom 3?

I was using the 4.8 when this started happening, so I upgraded to the 4.9s but the problem is still there.

You guys are just having no END of problems with that PC. Man.

Could be a bad XP install. I really can't think of anything.

I've been working with 4.7 all this time. 4.8 was horrendously slow. Try going back...?

In terms of downgrading drivers, do I just go ahead and find a 4.7 download link and go ahead and install them, or do I need to "uninstall" the 4.9s somehow first?

If you're using 4.9's you shouldn't be having problems. Just downgrade, ATi's drivers are the rawk.

And that's your first problem. XP > 2000, as far as gaming goes.

DONT USE THE 4.9 BETA DRIVERS

They ****ed up windows good for me. Use them at your own risk I guess, but the 4.8 Catalyst already has some OpenGL tweaks to improve Doom 3 performance, so they should suffice.

i've been using 4.9s since the 4.8s came out... after installing the 4.8s made my computer slow even the start menu was insanely slow (and no games would even run)

Hmmm, I've been using the 4.9 betas since they came out and everything has worked fine.

The difference is marginal at best. I have used boxes with both and had no issues with the 2k over XP and performance was the same *shrug*

Don't I have to reformat if I install XP, or is there some upgrade option to go from 2000 - XP without losing anything?

i'm pretty sure you can get Xp and install over the old one.

There is an XP version that just upgrades your current windows to the XP theme and adds XP features... it's around like 200 or soemthing here.

NOOOOOOO

Go for the full XP install disc, only 80-ish if you go for home, 160-200 if you go for pro...and there's other ways.

But yes, you do have to format. Just backup all your crap, and get wild.

Eh, I'm fine. I don't feel like reinstalling every single program (especially all my games) I have just for a new OS.

If you "upgrade" you'll end up wanting to format later cause your computer will probally end up running worse.

Go get partition magic. Then you dont have to worry bout losing all your stuff when you format.
