ECHOMAN, you're probably right...

The entire point of this monthly video game review exercise originally started as something I could use to force myself to write (more or less OK material) on a regular basis, as opposed to writing just "when I feel like it."

Thanks for reading, Massassians. And what's wrong with "epic win"? It's a great game. I like. :)

The problem is, even if you love a game, an overwhelmingly positive review doesn't really tell the reader anything. You gush about how awesome it is to be able to run up walls whilst holding tanks and then ground stomp from the top of a skyscraper, but you never really justify that. The only mention you make of why someone may not like the game is a very brieft caveat at the end. What's worse is that in this caveat you make a thinly veiled attack dismissing those who don't like the the premise as wussy.

The graphics in Prototype are pretty dated, yet your only mention of graphics is in the sidebar which says 'Very nice, I like. How much?'

How about mentioning that the wall-climbing abilities become irritatingly fiddly when you're trying to reach the top of the various thin-spired skyscrapers? As a reviewer you need to be willing to talk about the problems, even if you loved the game. An overwhelmingly positive or negative review does your credibilty no favours.

I think Prototype looks stupid.

Also, the writing style sounds pretty much standard-issue "misanthropic nerd" which was already tired when Yahtzee started doing it, and certainly is now (it generally works for him because he has funny illustrations and can be pretty clever). None of the jokes or "quirky" comments did anything for me in your review, and by the time you said "epic win" I pretty much wanted to kill you.

It's a lame, dated internet meme that even the 14 year olds who created it got sick of at least a year ago?

Epic win is a phrase that came out of 4chan, and got run into thr ground by the entire internet.
Along with the word Epic, I liked that word.
Damn you 4chan.

To be honest I didn't see the graphics as dated, but chances are that you're right. And good point about the controls getting fiddly, I completely forgot about that.

Haha. Well, sorry for torturing you like that, man. Like I've said, ECHOMAN's initial assessment was right.

Thank you both for taking the time to read and write constructive feedback, that was actually very helpful (especially Detty's post). Much appreciated!
