Best puzzles in gaming...

I'm trying to be inspired to make more Magrucko Daines levels but I'm really struggling to think of puzzles that I could feature that I haven't done already.

It got me wondering is there any games bar Tomb Raider that had great puzzles which I can maybe check out. Discuss :)

- oh, and maybe describe the best puzzle in the game? Would help alot.

Uh.

Any zelda ever?

And by "ever" you mean pre-64, right?

Just because you suck at the water temple doesn't mean they don't have good puzzles.

Any significant adventure game of the 90's, such as Space Quest, Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Loom, etc.

Funny you should say that Emon, just this second I finished Monkey Island SE.

Lots of youtubing games in store. Zelda I haven't really played so I need to really get into that, and Detty I haven't heard of any of those games so I need to look them up too.

I just watched a video of the first level of research and development. I like it very much.

7th guest, the microscope puzzle.

even on an old computer it was hard, on a newish one, it is near impossible. (this is because the computer has a set amount of time to work out its move, which means that the faster your computer, the more moves it can considder)

Been playing a bunch of HL2 mods... let's see what we got here:

Deja Vudu: Simple puzzles. It was fun though, and well executed. Voice overs didn't work for me though for some reason.

Dreamball: Lackluster Super Monkey Ball clone. Some very simple puzzles. Overall a bit boring though.

Ether: You can freeze any prop or make it very light so it can be pushed easy. Didn't play too much of this so I dunno if it's any good.

Radiator: Sort of puzzle. Not sure exactly what genre it was, other than fun.

Research and Development: Best one of this, easily the longest, fun new twist on the HL2 universe.

Best puzzle in this one is the gravity gun. The puzzles were simple and easy to figure out, but it's somehow satisfying to put them all together and claim your prize.

Wait actually that's the second best puzzle. The best puzzle is the microwave.

Shantytown: Fun little point and click adventure. Saved games don't work though and IIRC occasionally it glitches and you need to restart. :X It was good though. Too bad the story is unresolved.

Weekday Warrior: Another fun little adventure game.

Yeah other than R&D none of them have a "best" puzzle since the rest aren't really long enough.

[Edit: Oh yeah, Portal Prelude is fun, if you can stand the horrid voice acting.]

Yeah Prelude was good, too.

I can't believe no one suggested this already:

Myst.

Or even better, its sequel: Riven.

Those games are nothing but puzzles, and some of them really are mindjobs.

Funny you mention that. I just was playing Ocarina, and hit the Water Temple. It was incredibly easy . I haven't played it in a while too, so I was surprised.

Really? I mean, The Tower of Hanoi puzzle in Mass Effect is workable in about fifteen seconds if you've ever seen it before, and the containment lab puzzle is just simple arithmetic. I can't think of anything from KotOR that's significantly harder. The lion statue in Jade Empire took me a bit, but that's just because it requires some exploration.

I love Bioware's games, but I definitely don't think "puzzles" when I think of Bioware.

The stone tower temple in Majora's Mask is far more challenging. And will make your brain hurt.

Indeed, my experience with BioWare (mostly KotOR) is that their storytelling is the focus.

If you like Myst and Riven, Myst III is a good investment too.

Edit: Oh oh oh, Dino Crisis is a good puzzle game too.

There was this one puzzle in Wolfenstein 3D where you had to find a key since there was this door that could only be opened with the said key.

I always enjoyed the riddles in Baldur's Gate 2, although I don't know if they'd count as puzzles in the same sense as the more physical ones you guys have mentioned.

Now that I think of it, the game had quite a few. The genie in Irenicus' dungeon, crossing the bridge to Kalah's tower, the whole of Spellhold's insane asylum. Probably some I can't remember, too.

JK had some really great puzzles. Fuel station, valley descent, inside the valley.

Why do so many people have issues with the water temple? Even Master Quest wasn't that hard.

I'd venture a guess that one key gets people -- In the main center column, revealed when the platform under the door floats.

Could be wrong, but everyone I know always misses that one.

Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective

Still have it. Played it a couple years ago, but really it wasn't that hard.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. (Never finished it)

Indiana Jones: and the Emperors Tomb?

I'm not much of a puzzle gamer, sorry.

But I must say, probably Ocarina of Time.

which puzzle in particular?

Hardest, most obscure ones for me were ALL OF DISCWORLD I. Discworld II was much mroe sensible though.

The whole water temple >.< . Its just such a big maze ugh. But I also hated all the other sub puzzles that are particulary necessary and do a poor job of telling you what you need to do, or hinting. Like the whole ordeal to get the long sword.
