Seriously, all I can find through google is how 480P means 480 scan lines, I need to know the XbyY resolution.
Thanks.

Don't think so, I mean the 4:3 TV resolution.

You just answered your own question. If it's 4:3 and 480P, it's 480 height and 480 * 4/3 width, which is 640.

NTSC DVD 720x480 (both 4:3 discs and 16:9 discs are done this way)
standard def ATSC (digital) broadcasts at 4:3 will be either 640x480 or 704x480 (16:9 always 704x480)

the actual square pixel resolutions are
4:3 640x480
16:9 853x480

Your problem is, 480p really does mean 480 scanlines, or otherwise known as 480 pixels high. 480p can really be many different widths, depending on the aspect ratio, as you'll notice by everyone else's posts.

Any ideas for getting this computer to not look terrible connected to an SDTV? I have to lower the res to 500x357 just so I can read the text on it.

And thanks for all the help so far, you guys are awesome.

Changing the DPI in display settings is a better idea. It affects fonts systemwide as well as icons and such.
2009-08-23, 6:07 PM #16
Yeah --^

It can cause some wacky things though w/ programs that aren't good at doing scaling. For instance, fullscreen games would appear off-center by a large amount (to the right and down) when I bumped DPI up really high on my htpc. In those situations, you have to right-click->properties the EXE and choose "Disable scaling when high DPI settings are used" or whatever in the compatibility settings.

who doesn't have an hdtv yet and why
2009-08-23, 6:19 PM #18
I don't have an HDTV because I usually watch shows or movies on my PC, for which I have two Dell 2007FPs. When I do watch things in my living room (usually with friends), the SDTV I have is good enough.

I don't have 3000 dollars to replace the old CRT in the basement I never even use except for this.

I use my monitor. 26' 1920x1200. When I have more money and start watching things with friends I'll buy something larger, but it'll still be hooked up to the PC.

A widescreen monitor that's capable of displaying 1280x720 or 1920x1200 totally counts as an HDTV.

This is probably off topic, but anyhow, maybe it has something to do with it.

I capture 8mm tapes and then burn them on dvd's so people can play them. I was doing a 15 of them a bit back, and they all went fine, except for one. They were all recorded with the same camera. This one tape however, would not play properly in my camera. So I put it aside and continued with the others. After trying again and again, I tried another camera, that was a neighbors. Nope it didn't work there either.

Saddened by this, I took that type back and had to receive less payment. However that tape would playback in the camera it was recorded in, but the rest were also recorded in that camera. Any explanation?
Nothing to see here, move along.

You can get 40+" of TV for less than $1000. 1080p too.

Well, a thousand bucks is a lot of money for someone who doesn't have it to blow on a TV. Still, his $3000 figure was way high. I bought my 1080i set for less than that back in 2004. It was still on the high end because I chose a higher end model that had all the present and future connections I would need. It doesn't have HDMI but the DVI connector is HDCP compliant so no worries with an HDMI - DVI cable.
