Do I install it? If I do what do I need to do to fix any possibility compatibility problems? I'm thinking a restore point?

SP2 has been running just fine for me.

SP2 is basically one big IE upgrade. Spyware scanner, firewall's better, virus scanner, IE blocks popups. I hear it's nice, but I prefer firefox, so I haven't even bothered with it.

So basically if you're already on top of things with adaware/spybot, have a firewall, and use Firefox, there's no point?

I's an upgrade, so upgrade. It's probably already downloaded itself without you realising anyway.

Not if you turn their upgrade crap off.

You should install it. It beefs up the XP firewall (heh...) and it does help with security.

If you're going to use XP, you might as well keep it as patched as possible.

I just got this from the IT people here at GT:
Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
The Windows XP Service Pack 2 recently released by Microsoft is known
to change the behavior of some programs. The Georgia Tech Office of
Information Technology (OIT) would like all Windows users on campus to
be aware that there is some potential for problems when installing
Windows XP SP2. Some campus users report having installed SP2 without
incident.

OIT is coordinating a 30-day test of Windows XP SP2 by ResNet and the
computer support representatives (CSR or CSS) who support departments
and academic units. OIT will report the results of the test in a campus
announcement to be sent out on September 27, 2004.

Until we have more information, please follow the recommendations below.

Microsoft has issued a list of the software applications that may be
affected by Windows XP SP2.

If you are the administrator of a Windows XP computer, either at work
or at home, before you apply the SP2 update, check the list to see if
any of the programs are installed on the computer.

Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 884130:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2

Your decision to apply the Windows XP SP2 update should depend on your
ability to return your system to its previous state if you experience
problems. Whether or not you apply SP2, continue to run your antivirus
and personal firewall software.

- Before you apply SP2, read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 884130.

- To delay the installation of SP2 without turning off the AutoUpdate
feature, please see:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx

- If you install the update, test any applications that may be affected.

- If SP2 interferes with your use of an application, uninstall the
update or search for a solution on the Microsoft website.

- If you have questions, please contact the OIT Customer Support
Center, 404.894.7173.

More Information from Microsoft

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), some
programs may seem not to work. By default, Windows Firewall (referenced
in the article below) is enabled and blocks unsolicited connections to
your computer. This article discusses how to enable a program to run by
adding it to the list of exceptions. This procedure permits the program
to work as it did before the service pack was installed.

Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 842242:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242#appliesto

Though I'm sure I'm going to download the SP2, I'm waiting to see what the results of their study are so I know what I'm getting into.

Hmm, unless Microsoft is constantly releasing new spyware and virus definitions, the built in scanners aren't very useful. I mean they clean up small things but I doubt it would fix a whole system.

Edit: It would also be interesting to see how well the popup blocker works. Hopefully it's like Firefox's and blocks only unwanted popups, and still works with wanted popups. And hopefully it blocks all popups, unlike the Google Toolbar.

I doubt that they would attempt to "clean" a system after infection.

Well, I've just put it on (and I had to use IE to download it.. boooooooo), and my first impression was "oooo" for the nice thingy telling me that AVG needed updating, THAT I was happy with. Then I realised it had reinstated all the s***e I deleted from my start menu, and I'm in the midst of deleting it all over again. Grrr...

I downloaded it, and I figured I'd install it later. Well I guess it installed itself! I've not had problems yet, but I can definitely say I wish it would have asked to INSTALL.

Service Pack 2 is great, but it broke my Windows Installer to a point of no repair. Interestingly, I've read posts of other people having the same problems. Windows Installer, with any program, just quits randomly throughout an installation (usually in the beginning or the end).

I tried re-regestering my Windows Installer with the unregister/register run commands with no luck.
2004-08-26, 6:48 PM #19
SP2 doesn't include a spyware/virus scanner. What it does is give you a lot more control over which DLLs and BHOs are loaded into IE from under the Tools menu. Also, its aware of many different virus scanners and will alert you if the scanner isn't running or if something disabled it.

But seriously people, if there is a patch, just get it, people who are arrogant (or ignorant) and don't get them are the reason that a lot of these worms are devistating.

And security vunerabilities are hardly limited to windows, just because you run a *nix doesn't make you infinitely safe.

KegZ, have you tried uninstalling the service pack and trying again or maybe a restore point?

I had it two weeks ago, I found it had mysteriously finished downloading quite quicky. I assume it's something to do with me having the release candidate installed already.

I installed it on my desktop and it runs no problem. I installed it on my laptop and the first try went AWOL. It couldn't copy msmsgs.exe. I really really hate that program. Now the second install works fine. Although it abruptly cut off my wireless card. Now it's working good..for now. Strange.

Yeah, actually, it does. Do you even know how linux works? The only thing that can happen is you getting hacked, and while it's a very real possibility, if you're careful it shouldn't matter. Just don't use root for everything.

Search for Unix/Linux buffer overflow on google, you'll definitely find a bunch, and that's just one type of vunerability.

Yeah, that's for servers. And it has to be a personalized attack.

Almost a good try though.
