Time it upgrade my rig? What with?

Okay so I got me:

Pentium IV 2.4 GHz processor
512 MB DDR RAM
GeForce 4 Ti4200 128 MB
Elite P4S5A Socket A Mobo

Can't think of anything else upgrade-worthy since it's all just drives and whatnot. Not sure about my budget yet, but make some suggestions and give me ideas (in Great Britain Pounds Sterling preferably).

all you'd really need to think about with that system is maybe put another stick of 512 in there if your mobo's got another slot for it, and look into another video card, maybe an ATI radeon X800 or somethign, but I don't know anything about the cards that are any better than the 9800XT i've got, so i should keep my mouth shut on that one i think.

A new video card and a new stick of RAM or two.

I have a one piece of advice for you: Listen to EXACTLY what Dj_Yoshi says, when he gets here. You'll be getting a new system by the end of the year, if you don't.

And for god sakes, don't take after spiral.

I don't see why you'd need to upgrade, unless you want to play Doom3 on the highest graphics settings or Halflife 2 flawlessly. If you're intent on wasting money, yeah, upgrade the video card and get more ram.

The card is the bottle neck on that syetem. Getting a Radeon 9800 Pro for $200 won't be a waste of money because it will run anything thrown at it pretty well.

upgrade to a gig of ram and a 9800Pro or XT depending on how much you wish to spend

that should last you long enough until it's actually time for a new computer

An extra stick of RAM wouldn't do you any harm, and that's quite a cheap upgrade... especially if you have some cash left over for relatives congradulating you on good GCSE grades! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

yes, but for how long?

It seems that some of you are constantly upgrading your cards.

I have officially had my Radeon 9800 for a year now, and it has been a great performer so far. I dont imagine I will upgrade it until early next year, or spring sometime.

Videocard: Radeon 9600 (the SE and Pro version can be found for >$100 if you look hard enough) or if you'd like, a Radeon 9800 for about $200. Blowing $500 on an X800 or 6800 is a huge waste of money IMO.

Apparently your mobo can't support faster than 266DDR or faster than 400FSB... It wouldn't really be worth it to spend $200 going from a 2.4 to a 2.6 GHz (the highest your mobo supports, I believe) won't net you that much at all.

Upgrading your mobo will open up your options a lot, but that would be more like getting a new computer. If you'd really like, get a small upgrade in your videocard (anything past a Radeon9800 wouldn't matter anyway because then your CPU and RAM would be WAY bottlenecking an X800, rendering it useless.

[By the way, I'm curious, but what made you decide you needed to upgrade. I've been running a system much worse off than yours and it still runs any game i throw at it just fine, even at the higher resolutions and settings]

I'm a fanboy? I bought an nVidia card even though I could've bought the worse-performing ATi X800 Pro for the same price. If I were a fanboy I wouldn't have gone with the X800.

Considering a decent price limit, here you go.

Processor: AMD 64 3000+
Motherboard: MSI K8 Neo Platinum, nforce 3 chipset
RAM: 2x512 PC3200 (doesn't matter what kind, really, but shoot for Crucial, Corsair, or Kingston)
Video Card: Now here's the problem. If you have 400 bucks laying around, I'd suggest picking up the 6800GT. If you have 300 bucks laying around, I'd suggest picking up the 6800. If you have 200 bucks laying around, I'd suggest picking up the 9800 pro. And if you have for some reason 500 bucks laying around, think about it. If you want to upgrade in a year or maybe a year and a half, pick up the X800 XT. If not, then get the 6800 Ultra. The X800 will outperform the 6800 until they implement PS 3.0 in all games. After that, it's all 6800.
Case: Make sure you have plenty of fans, 2 at the very least, 4 preferrable, I have 6 personally [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I believe that pretty much covers it.
