Quitting smoking. Oh god this is gonna be bad

Havent started yet. I... am.... FREAKIN' OUUTTT

tomorrow is when i start, or stop rather.
I have 23 nicotine gums to help me, and im gonna make appointment with doc for support.

This may be the hardest thing i have ever done, and i am a complete wimp, i dont expect to succeed 1st time round.

The only thing i'm looking forward to is what physical improvements come of it, and how quickly. Within a month i'm expecting to see some improvement in my face, ie skin, and energy levels.

Whats your experience massassi?
Is timing important? I'm about to start 2nd year of Games Art course, and work load can be stressful.

Advice plz k.

Most people I know that actually quit did it cold turkey. No gum, patchs, or anything like that. Just a mental decision.

I've never smoked though, so I dunno what its actually like.

I'm just over a month into my third time of quitting. I quit this time because after I had surgery a month or so ago I found that the person who intubated me was not the most gentle and scratched the **** out of my throat, so I could barely swallow let alone consider smoking. After my throat started to feel better I realised I'd gone over a week without smoking so I might as well carry on. Both of the times I've taken up the habit again have been during very stressful or upsetting times where I've spent most of a given day drinking and smoking too much and carried on afterwards.

Honestly, I've rarely gone more than a couple of days at the most without thinking about or craving a cigarette. Hell, I've started thinking about them now thanks to you (:P). Time spent drinking or during work are the worst for me personally.

Advice other people can give you can only get you so far. In the end it does boil down to a matter of willpower, because I don't think people ever truly stop being addicted to smoking. The only thing I will say to you is don't just give up or berate yourself if you find yourself having a cigarette a couple of days after quitting. Try and use it to better yourself; set that time as a marker and get yourself as far past it as you possibly can the next time. The longer you go without the easier it'll get to carry on.

I can't quit, it's hard as hell, but I can leave it for extended periods. Tips and ideas:

TIPS:
-When ever you feel like grabbing a smoke, drink down as much warm water as you can.
-Keep your self busy
-Do heavy excersises (frequently)
-Try not to think about it, if you do, remember, it just costs you money and ruins your health. You're not benefitting at all from the damn things.

IDEAS:
-There is a mouth wash called "QUIT", supposedly, when it comes in contact with nicotine, it will taste so terrible, you can gag or actually vomit, thus preventing you from smoking. Could try that.
Nothing to see here, move along.

douse a cigarette in milk and let it go sour, attempt to smoke it

That'd be more likely to make me quit the mouthwash :P

k theres a big problem right there.
This is never going to work if you have no confidence in yourself. I know you better then this Ruthven, you are a lot stronger then you think you are. But if you don't start really putting your mind to succeeding and absolutely refusing to fail, then you will fail.

My dad quit cold turkey after smoking since he was like 13 or something. Did it on his first try. Maybe you should isolate yourself or something. Go on a vacation to a place where there aren't a lot of stores and you'd have to go far out of your way to buy a pack.

I enjoy smoking cigarettes. I ended my dependency on them a few months ago. However, I'll still have the occasional cigarette after a few beers with some friends. I think that it's difficult to quit for some people because while they know logically that they need to quit for health reasons, they really enjoy the act of smoking. It's also more difficult if you have an addictive personality. For some people, even after the chemical dependency is gone, there's still a psychological dependency.

I'm rooting for you, Ruthy! Be strong and don't give in, if for no other reason than to prove the sheer ****ing strength of your own will, man.

When you feel like smoking, drink some milk. I'm not kidding. Cigarettes just don't go good with milk.

And have some confidence in yourself, sheesh.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

I once (2004) decided to quit smoking and have never smoked since.

However my consumption of porn went through the roof around that time. Hmm..

Someone should turn that into a hat. Like really, I saw some awesome custom hat models, someone should model a ton of cigarettes and big lips for the spy.

I quit smoking a week ago, after having smoked for about two years. All I did was throw my cigars away. :P

Yeah, but checking back in to report on your progress might. Our collective disappointment if you should fail should spur you into trying harder :)

You could try an electronic cigarette. They're basically cigarette shaped nicotine vaporizers. The nicotine cartridges come in a ton of different flavors, and the cigarettes themselves come in sizes large to small as a regular cigarette. You can smoke them right next to people and, aside from the smell (which is usually sweet and pleasant, depending on the flavor I guess), not have them notice.

I might try to quit smoking. I've tried three times before, but I keep buying a pack whenever I get drunk.

Good luck Ruthy.

That's funny, I was just thinking to myself, "I wish someone would tell me where I could get a revolutionary smoking device that provides the same nicotine fix as traditional cigarettes." How fortuitous!

And to bring us back on track, did Ruthven ever manage to quit smoking?

(This happened when I was away so I missed all of these exciting character development episodes on massassi.)

Good luck, Ruthven, but I can't imagine it being anything but painful if any success comes out of it. Possible weight gain, irritability and just about any other symptom associated with trying to beat an addiction. That, and if you often smoked with a lot of other smokers, I can't imagine your social life will benefit or get much support from them.

Sorry to point you out, Ford, but after going to your wedding, where EVERYONE smoked 24/7, it's probably a living hell to try quit smoking in that sort of environment.
