Planning to build a new computer

I want a computer that will be able to run the games coming out now, such as Modern Warfare 2 (I'm guessing it will run similarly to CoD:WaW)

Current computer:

Processor:AMD Athlon
3200+
2.00 GHz, 1 GB of RAM

Graphics Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE

HDD:232 GB

Motherboard:ASUSTeK Computer INC. A8S-X Rev 1.xx

So far, the best-seeming recommendation from other sources has been

Tell me what you think I should get

Trying to keep budget in the area of 700 dollars, willing to go to 780 or so if need be.

If it can't be done, tell me and I'll come back when I have more money

I would recommend going either AM3 or LGA1156 (i5/i7 8-series) to keep your options open for upgrades just in case you want to make them in the next year or so.

If you're on a budget and your primary concern is gaming, I would suggest the Phenom II X3 720:

There are some combos w/ decent mobos and other stuff (like the MSI 4890) for that on Newegg.

Here are some other good mobos to go with:

Cheaper:

Slightly more expensive but faster NB/SB

Here's a solid budget case

Good solid PSU (Corsair's "value" line, but still very good)

The next generation of video cards is supposed to come out within a few months - from what I've read, it may be worth waiting for them (or getting a midrange card to hold you over 'till then).
woot!

Next month even, so I think this would be one one the few situations where it's worth waiting for the new hardware.

Wouldn't this statement also be true a few months ago, and a few months from now, etc? There's always going to be something "better" coming out "later".

Yeah but in this case the time is short enough (i.e. it's the end of the last generation) that it actually is worth waiting.

I noticed the memory you linked to in your first post was DDR2 800, if you are sticking with the AM2+ motherboards get DDR2 1066, if you go with one of Pommy's AM3 suggestions get DDR3 1066. This isnt even about overclocking, this is just to achieve the proper HT link speeds for your processor.

Like Pommy said - it's a short wait for the next generation of cards...not another incremental increase in speed (i.e. a 4870 to 4890, GTX 275 / 285, etc).

No. New generations of GPU architectures are released only out about every 1.25 years. While cards are released between generational upgrades, they are usually minor tweaks, and provide only marginal improvements, while performance usually increases by 50 to 100% from generation to generation. If you don't tend up upgrade very often, buying at the beginning of a new generation is key to maximizing the useful life your hardware.

Apparently Dirt2 is DirectX 11, as is the next STALKER game.

I will be waiting for a next-gen card. :)
