I just dropped my car off at a paint shop to be painted. I'm nervous. I don't like leaving my car in other people's hands and I'm not sure what to expect.

On a side note, a gallon of red automotive paint is over $500. Holy ****!

Post your car pics.

Where the hell did you buy that paint?

Thats a ripoff.

I thought the same thing until I did some homework and found out that's just the way it is...
2009-09-12, 7:55 PM #4
Yes, it is a ripoff considering you don't need a friggin' gallon of paint to do a whole car. What do you drive, a ****ing limo?

I think there's a way to do it on the cheap with out the expensive paint. I was a site that documented it, but I can't find it anymore.

I remember a thread here about a poster's Trans Am that was ruined by a cheap paint job.

As long as they do good work, it might be worth the price.

For standard paint it really shouldn't be so expensive for one gallon.

A pint of black paintcode UA for a ford cost me $50.

A pint is sixteen ounces. Fifty for sixteen. So a quart (thirty-two) is a hundred. A half-gallon (sixty-four) is two hundred.

Thus, a gallon (one-twenty-eight) would be four hundred.

Seems about right to me.

Also, of course you'd use a gallon of paint on a car -- unless you only did one coat, that is. If I remember correctly, the factory usually does something like five coats of paint and seven coats of clear; aftermarket is usually two and three, respectively.

Right but being overcharged by $100 is a rip off to me. Thats $100 you could put towards clear or sealer.

I never said it's gonna take a whole gallon to paint my car. I'm not a body man (hence the reason I'm not doing it myself...) but I understand it takes about 3 qts to do a good job on a car. Doing simple math to extrapolate the price of a gallon of red paint based on a pint of black is ludicrous. Red is by far the most expensive color. There are so many different brand and styles of paint that that comparison is meaningless.

I just pulled out a paint estimate from a year ago from a different shop, this was DuPont paint which is comparable to PPG which is what my shop is using. The base red paint was $136/qt and the clear was about half that.

I've been thinking about painting this thing for a couple years now, so I've read tons of article and forums about it. I've seen the famous "$100 paint jobs" and the orange beetle, and the orange charger, and all those. Seen a couple guys who did them to their car too, and it looks great from a small distance and it's certainly better than rust or multi-colored cars, but up close you can just tell it's not a professional job. I wanted something I could wax, be proud of, take to local shows, etc etc.

My father painted cars professionally for about 10 years while he was laid off from his regular job. I asked him about this and he said your best bet is to go to an auto supply and buy the paint yourself, then bring it to the paint shop and have them lay it on for you. The paint, for just a simple base red, will be much cheaper even if you get something reasonably good like PPG than it will be if you have the paint shop supply the paint.

All done. Just got it back today. They fully disassembled the car, did the door jambs, inner fenders, black headlight buckets, repaired over 40 door/rock dings throughout the body, and did some fiberglass repair work on the front lower "chin" spoiler.

Nice. Too bad it's an RS. I love the 3rd generations, but the RS was so over-produced...
