Random Idea: Rewrite JK Engine?
2009-09-17, 8:33 AM #1
Been a very long time since I last posted on here. The steam release has brought me back. I was really looking forward to it then to find it wasn't updated. Then to remember that they can't because the source is gone. So a kind of radical idea popped into my head. We've got all the data files. How difficult would it be to re-write a new JK engine for modern systems?

The graphical part would likely be the easier portion. Modern API probably includes a lot of the things they had to program by hand. Getting the gameplay to work exactly as it did...that would be a challenge.

It's probably not do-able...but I thought I'd throw it out there, see what more knowledgeable people thought.

I always kept my head out of this topic, but I'm under the impression it's been tried/started and failed.

And if my skimming of the relevant threads was good enough, it's a BIIIIIG task.

Yeah, that's been tried at least once.

You see, the problem is, essentially, from what I gather, that it is hard.

Yeah people attempted it before with Sith 2, and i think one of main the problems was that the original engine didn't make any sense and none of the values used for anything were coherent.
nope.

A TC for a new engine would be easier and better in every way. Source might be good, even if it is starting to show it's age. I don't really like UE3 or the Ageia API. The biggest problem is a lack of games that really mod well, and the demise of the modding community in general.

Yeah, the graphics part seems to be the easiest. Kiramin got a jlk renderer working with openGL ES on the iphone.

Sorta... We were going to make a game and figured working with JED for the geometry would be awesome. He ran into some bugs and lost interest. I sent the source to someone around here, but I can't remember who it was. He got 6000 block rendering perfectly at one point, but there was a memory leak so it got all sluggish and then crashed, if I remember correctly.

Just throwing out ideas.
