Anyone else thinking about building a new computer in the next few months?

The Core i5 750 looks quite promising..I'd like a refresh this winter, and I think it'll be a good time with the i5's coming out and the next video cards right around the corner.

Tentative list-
Core i5 750
Motherboard (?)
6Gb DDR3
64Gb-ish SSD
Radeon 58xx series card (or nVidia's new offering when it's out)

Maybe a pair of 1Tb WD Caviar Black's..not sure yet.

I already have the other stuff- case/PS, storage drive, dvd/bluray/etc. A new case would be nice, but not necessary. I am hoping my PS will be alright (500w).

On that note..if anyone wants an Abit IP35E, E5200 @ 3.24Ghz w/Arctic Freezer Pro and 4Gb of DDR2-800 around that time, feel free to let me know. :P

That's pretty close to the new rig I intend to build, although the IP35-E is an Abit board, not ASUS :P

Heh, oops. I knew it was one of those A-guys. :P

It ran great with a 4870- with the 4650 in it now, it's not a big fan of new games at high res / high detail...but that's easily solved with a good card.

What's your timeframe on the build? Are you considering an E5200-ish or an i5-ish? If the former, I can sell you stuff. :D

Timeframe is more or less whenever I get a job secured and settled in. I should get word on that within a week, providing that works out the build could be only a month away.

I've laid out the build on newegg; 2.8GHz E7400, 4GB of DDR2-800, ASUS P5N-D mobo.

I need to build a nas box. I'm considering an all out update, but then I don't really play games that much anymore, and I guess I'll just keep playing things as they come out on Steam, or I'll wait for something significant that my 8800 can't solve. I should see what CPU my mobo supports.

Is it massively faster than a C2D? I'm hoping for a huge improvement..I'm tired of laggy menus and churning HD's, so I'm really thinking about a Core i5 (benchmarks are impressive), a SSD for the OS drive and a couple of WD Blacks for programs. Storage can go on cheap slow huge drives..though if I'm able to get a deal on a pair of 1Tb blacks, I doubt I'll need anything more for a while. :P

In November I get a sweet bonus check. Thats when I'm building. Hopefully Nvidia is releasing their gtx300 around then so I'll have a choice for videocard. Although the 5870 is showing some great numbers in the leaked out benchmarks so far.

I probably wont get the i5 750, I have no need for it but I want the hyperthreading bragging rights.

Ill have to price out i7 860 vs i7 920.

Yeah.., I'm not entirely sure which card I will be getting. Probably whichever is faster/cheaper! I'll be doing mine sometimes after the Windows 7 release, though I just got Windows 2008 Server R2, which apparently makes a good gaming OS if set up properly..hrm.

Intel's 32nm refresh is expected to hit by December, it may be worth waiting for. That, and the next generation of video cards should be out by then, too.

ATI's next gen cards are coming out in a few weeks. It might be worth waiting to see what nVidia's coming out with, or maybe ATI will cut prices a bit when nVidia's stuff comes out..hm.

Last year I spent $2k on a go-kart. This year I'm splurging and building a box. Probably i5, I've never had a "sweet" machine so I'm going all out. Probably with a 295gtx

If you're going to spend that much on a card, wait for the new ones.

I'm starting a list-
ASUS P7P55D LE
Intel Core i5 750 Lynnfield
G.Skill DDR3 1333 2x2Gb

I have some learning to do...not sure if I'm looking for dual or triple channel RAM.

When do they come out? And what are they?

You guys know the i7s are faster than the i5s, right? Going "all out" would be getting an i7.

Pretty close.

I'm not going all out - the price/benefit ratio gets a bit too expensive for my liking. :P

The Radeon HD 5800 series cards are coming out in a couple of weeks. nVidia's new cards should be out before January.

Funny. I'm also planning on building soon but held off due to a lot of next-gen CPUs and graphics cards coming out in the coming weeks. Already bought my Lian-Li case for it though.

I wonder how overclocking will work with the turbo mode/PCU ****.

The Anandtech review addresses that a bit - the i5's need more voltage to OC well, and you can clock much higher with turbo mode disabled. I will probably just leave it at stock speeds...my E5200 @ 3.24Ghz is doing just fine now, so I'll probably be more than happy with something faster.

Yeah, honestly it's probably best for us just to upgrade our graphics cards. I'm running a Q6600 + 8800GTS on the IP35-pro, and it runs new games okay but sub-optimally (<60 fps), and probably like yours it's mainly limited by the graphics card. Hard to resist buying shiny new computer components though :-(.

One thing that irks me about the P35 board is no PCIe 2.0. I'm not too sure about this, but I'm thinking the new DX11 cards will be limited by the smaller bandwidth of the PCIe 1.1 x16 slots. If that's the case, then there's a legitimate reason to buy a new mobo and everything else.

You're probably right - I imagine I could just get a higher-end C2D chip, a good video card and a fresh OS install and be perfectly happy.

I just got $98.87 from American Express (extended warranty claim), so the PC-upgrade-fund now has money in it. :awesome:

Well, my other claim from Amex was approved, so I haz moar $. The fund is growing! So, gurus. For gaming in 1920x1080, should I keep my E5200 and get a new video card (and a faster HD), or is it worth the upgrade to an i-series?

You know you're going to upgrade to i-series anyway. Just do it. You have the money, obviously.

I would anyway, if I had the money. Unfortunately all my monies went to a new synth.

An E5200 is hardly a top of the line C2D.

I have an E8500 though, overclocked to 4ghz, and it still smokes every game I have combined with my 4870HD.
