new rat

So my wife picked us up a new rat yesterday, so we currently have three. But we didn't get this one from the pet store. A fellow sailor owns and breeds *snakes*. His wife got this rat to feed to a snake, but then decided it was too cute and couldn't bring herself to allow the rat to die. So he, knowing that I had pet rats, offered to give it to me. I accepted, and my wife went and picked it up from his wife.

Apparantly, she's *much* smaller (ie younger) than our other two. Since she was sold as a "feeder" animal, she was sold early. Hopefully we are able to raise her with no difficulties. Even though I haven't seen her, I am quite excited. Though by the time I get home, she'll be all big and normal.

Wife, post pictures!!!

EDIT: Ha he breeds SNAKES not rats. silly brain wanders at 4:30am.

She's pretty teeny tiny. Also, I named her Jude.

You have rats as pets? I thought they only did that in Monty Python comedy sketches about the hard knocks life.

Aren't rats pests? Isn't this like having a cockroach as a pet?

Nope. Rats make awesome pets, I had one when I was a kid.

Much cleaner than mice too, and far more intelligent.

And cuter!
nope.

Genetically, there is almost no difference between rat and mice, only in size.

Both are awesome.

I have mice.

Yes. I have several books on rats and mice.

They all state that both are almost genetically identical, and that the main difference is size.

By the way, check this video out:

Really cute rat! It's huge!

Sorry, but anything that has teeth that never stop growing is a freak in my book.

Rats and mice die too fast.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

By cleaner you mean bearing fewer plagues? And by more intelligent you mean more cunning at eating all your grain?

rats make awesome pets. WAAAY better than say hampsters. They don't smell bad (as long as you're not a complete wanker who doesn't clean the cage maybe once a week or so), and they almost never bite (though Buffy had this bad habit, which I mentioned here before, strange).

Also, see my edit above. The friend I mentioned in the first posts has snakes not rats. I was thinking rats and said he breeded and owned rats, when I meant snakes.

holy crap that rat is the size of a cat or puppy!

last night i put her very tall box near the rat cage so they can get to know each other by smelling each other and whatnot without picking on her since she is so tiny. i wake up this morning and check on them and she is in the cage with the other 2 rats cuddling. shes a little sneakster.
