So, it's time to get rid of the old 4800+ and get in this processor generation with an i5.
Parts list is final, I just need to know if what I already have will work with this:
Intel Core™ i5 Processor 750 2.66GHz w/ 8MB Cache
Asus P7P55D w/ Dual DDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, 1394, PCI-E, CrossFireX
Mushkin HP3-10666 High Performance DDR3 SDRAM, 4GB Dual Pack

Old parts (Please inform me of any incompats, that's why im here)
Geforce 8800GT, PCI-E
650 Watt ATX power supply (2 years old)
Generic as hell ATX case
2 SATA HDDs
Generic DVD-Multi drive.

So would I be able to plug that old stuff, into the new stuff and have a working system? Keep in mind that the parts list is final and that this is a strictly processor oriented upgrade, I'll upgrade the video card when the next gen Nvidia stuff is out.

Also as you can tell, I don't plan on using the crossfire for a while, it's there for futureproofing.

Also. 8 gigs of DDR2 ram for sale, oh how I wish this was compatible with the mobo.

If that DVD writer is IDE, I would dump it and get a SATA writer... no more IDE is awesome. Other than that, everything should work. What brand power supply though? Generic and low-quality power supplies are scary.

It's SATA, got it 3 months ago.
It's a good power supply OCZ StealthXtream

Oh hey, how is windows going to take this? Will I have to reinstall or will it just ask for me to re-activate?
2009-09-26, 10:21 PM #5
I've heard of people just needing to reactivate, but personally I would backup, format, and reinstall if at all possible. Fresh installs are so nice.

Totally different chipset, particularly a completely different USB controller standard. Wrong kernel, if your old CPU wasn't multi-core. Switches and bug fixes for your old processor that could adversely affect performance - i.e. using the PM timer instead of HPET or something for the TLB race condition bug. Software packages may use different binaries depending on the hardware configuration at install time (mostly games.)

Do you make a thread every hour?

For the longest time, I thought you were that annoying guy from Mexico. It turns out that you aren't, you are the annoying guy from Canada. Who is the guy from Mexico? Did either of you two go by different names at one point which would have thrown me off?

yeah, I sure mentioned 64-bit as a possible problem.
2009-09-27, 12:26 AM #10
Well you mentioned kernel changes, I don't think i5 needs a different kernel from Athlon 64 x2.
But you seem to know more then me, so enlighten me.

Just reinstall.

"Seem to." Yes, quite.

I believe I already did enlighten you. The mantra is reinstall, unless you know what you're doing. You don't know what you're doing. Reinstall.

Right, ok thanks.

Changing the motherboard is p.big deal. I always reformat/reinstall when I do.

Not to mention sometimes when you switch out your mobo Windows will ***** at you because your hardware identifier hash has changed too much and it'll give you "Windows is not geniuine" warning

So I got it, but because of my utter stupidity in not actually measuring, my case is too small.
Cooler Master Elite 330, Crap or not?
2009-09-27, 5:53 PM #19
Wait what how is that possible

Isn't it an ATX mobo and ATX case

It should fit... you might have to move some of the screw holders around on the motherboard tray?
2009-09-27, 6:45 PM #22
It physically won't fit, the DVD drive is in the way, I think I mistook it for an ATX when it was really micro ATX or somesuch.

But anyway, just ignore all that it isn't very useful in what i'm asking, Cooler Master Elite 330, Crap or not?
2009-09-27, 7:22 PM #23
Oh... I thought you HAD a CM Elite 330.....

Not their best, but not bad. I think this is still the one to get:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137

I thought I remembered there being a cheaper version out, but maybe I'm mistaken.
2009-09-27, 7:28 PM #24
I'd love one of those, but the price is too hight (Keep in mind this i5 upgrade was 515 dollars). cheapest in Canada I can find is 85$
The 330 is 50 at a local store.

Core i5 750 - $199.99

Asus P7P55D - $149.99

Corsair XMS3 2x2Gb - $129.99

$479.97 without shopping around at all..just grabbing whatever popped up on newegg.

I'm putting an extravagant system together online just for kicks. We're up to $1,783.96 and I don't even have a CPU yet. :ninja:

Antec 300 vs Cool Master Elite 330

Is the 300 worth 20 more dollars?

Are there any (realistically priced) PCI-e sound cards worth looking at? I'm looking for an excuse to upgrade my Audigy2 ZS..

You just spent over $6k and want to save $100 on a sound card? The X-Fi's will be alright, the Auzentech just has better quality sound and a few more features.
