Schools liquidating computers. Help me decide if I should get one?
2009-09-28, 10:05 PM #1
My university recently got all new computers and are selling the older ones. What's available is:
---
Looking at:
Dell Precision 380 - $450.00
Intel D – dual core @ 3.00GHz – 4.00 GB Ram
2 Hard Drives - 80GB and 250GB
Nvidia Quadro FS 1400 Graphics – DVD+RW Drive
Floppy Drive – Gigabit Ethernet – Soundblaster X-FI Sound
Front Mounted USB/Firewire Ports
===
Current Rig:
HP Media Center m7070n
Intel Pentium4 640 (P) HT 3.2 GHz - 1 GB Ram
250 GB Hard Drive
Geforce 8600 GT 512 MG card
---

I was just wondering if it'd be a good deal to buy the Dell and put the 8600 graphics card in it. Or if the computer is even worth that amount.

Also the deadline for this is tomorrow morning so I've only got about 10 hours to make up my mind. So any help would be great thanks.

Go for it, Can't hurt if it's f...
Oh it costs monies, post the amount.
2009-09-28, 10:07 PM #3
Oh it's 450, yeah that's way to much.
My new system cost only 600.
2009-09-28, 10:07 PM #4
Yeah that's what I was worried about :S
2009-09-28, 10:08 PM #5
We both post too quickly.
2009-09-28, 10:08 PM #6
Indeed
2009-09-28, 10:24 PM #7
$450 for a pre-Core2Duo?

Negative, ghostrider.

A buddy of mine picked up an AMD Phenom quad core / 4Gb / 640Gb for less than that from woot a few weeks back.
woot!

Pentium D is just two Pentium 4s sandwiched together minus the Hyperthreading. It would be slower than your current machine.

Oh ok. They also have some Mac Book Pro's I may check out for 200. Any opinions on what to look for in those?

Obligatory "Lol Macs" post.
2009-09-28, 10:41 PM #11
:p Yeah I've never had one before, used a lot though. Just looking for a laptop that can run Final Draft, Office, and Photoshop. Right now all I've got is some old Acer lappy with 1.6 GHZ, 256 MG of ram and a 40 GB hard drive :p.
2009-09-28, 10:41 PM #12
Yeah it can do that, but so can that acer.
2009-09-28, 10:43 PM #13
Liquidation sale? Those computers should be like $200. But I bet they'll get sold pretty quick because they have 4 gigs of RAM, a Creative sound card, and an Nvidia video card.
2009-09-28, 10:44 PM #14
MBPs for $200? Go for it, as long as they aren't Core Solos.
2009-09-28, 10:45 PM #15
Damn you guys post fast. Last post was in reference to original computers. $200 for a Macbook Pro is probably going to be at LEAST a few generations old....

I'd take a second MBP for $200 and just leave it at work! Even if it's first Intel generation it'll have bags of life in it.

Welp came out empty handed. They opened the doors at 9 but there had been people there since 4. Only 10 Macbooks, only 2 with more than a gig of ram and there was 40 people in front of me :p

EDIT:

Would it be good to just put more ram in my current rig? Or would that just be like polishing a turd?
2009-09-29, 9:40 AM #28
I think more ram in your current rig is a good idea only because DDR2 is cheap.

But that would probably be the last upgrade for that machine, keep an eye on for deals on a new computer ;)

Close, but ram is cheap as hell.
I guess it's like new tires on a ****ty car.

If your board can take ECC, I can hook you up. I'm guessing that it can't, though.

DDR is not cheap. Unless I'm mistaken, his doesn't take DDR2.

Everything I can find on the 'HP Media Center m7070n" says its DDR2.

I used to run Photoshop on an AMD K6-2 380MHz with 64mb of RAM.

;)

It might be worth trying to find some used as well...I should've stocked up when DDR2 was so cheap - the stuff I have was $10 or $20 (2x2Gb!)

If it supports it, I have 8 gigs of ddr2 for sale.
Desktop memory, 4 sticks of 2 gigs.

I think his board only takes 1Gb sticks.

What brand/timing? I have 2x2Gb of DDR2-800, and might go to 8Gb if the price is right.
