Well after a number of years of dialup and then a number more of satellite [hissgagcoughdie], i am now officially running dsl.

Unfortunately it is distributed over a router and as such seems to be pretty much an extreme pain to get any sort of game to connect online withtout bunches of tedious port-forwarding or similar things of that nature for each specific game. [eg i haven't gotten anything to work yet]

Mostly i felt like whinging, but if anyone has any suggestions they'd be welcome.

*shrug*

Everytime I've used DSL with a router (at lan parties), it was just a matter of plug and play.

No. No i do not.

And nope, Flexor. No love. Not even JA would work for me. Most of the things i tried i couldn't even get it to retrieve a server list [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

You could use DMZ host, which opens ports for you to play games. It just then becomes a pain for you to host (some) games.

Well in this case at least the router is the modem, or something to that effect.

I couldn't even get battlenet to connect..

I recently got DSL, and I am going through a router. I cannot host any games, Halo, Doom 3, BF: Nam, UT2K4, nothing works. I have tried portforwarding, all that good stuff.

This may be of some help to you with your router.

Do you know the router's IP address?

Yessir. THe problem seems to be with the router knowing which computer to forward/send game-related stuffs to. Or something.

I believe the computers are attached to a hub to which is also attached the dsl modem [the router].

Networks are a bit spooky and arcane to me, to be honest.

If you punch the router's IP into a web browser, there should be an interface for the router. From here you can configure virtual servers/open ports, etc. You should check the manual of the router for more information if you are not sure.

When you are opening a port, you have to specify the local port you wish to open.

IE, Counter Strike uses the port 27015. So I open:
192.168.123.***:27015

The *** designates the unique machine on the network. Note that this is the local IP address of the machine, not the router.

Ack, hub. Hubs are the devil.

Routers all the way. I think you can't do it with a hub in place, though I may be wrong. if I were you, I'd just get a router (linksys) for like 30 bucks on ebay, or something.

See the problem is, hubs give each specific computer on the network an IP, and if you've got a router built into your modem...well...routers are meant to split one IP into many computers by giving them their own IP via its internal DNS system so you can network multiple computers on one connection. Unless this hub does it specially, it'll try to give you IPs via an internet DNS, which is in the format 59.249.103.94 or something, whereas router DNS systems are alwayas 192.168.(numbar).(numbar) or something very similar.

Run, cmd, ipconfig, unless you're running nix, and I forget the command there. It'll give you your IP. If it's in the format of the 192.168.#.### then you just forward the ports to that IP. If not, then you're going to have a helluva time with that hub.

Ok it is a 192 address.

THanks, Connection et al, i knew the basics of port forwarding, i guess i was hoping that one wouldn't have to manually do that for all the ports of all the games one wanted to be able to play online, seems a bit excessive.. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

Though this page is most informative, though their list isn't as comprehensive as i would like, ie Jedi Academy and so forth [whomever posted it]: http://portforward.com/cports.htm

IP is a Network Layer protocol. Hubs are Physical Layer devices. Hubs do not and can not have any effect on IP addresses.

Ethernet is designed so that a LAN can typically be expanded by just tossing in another hub or switch. The physical setup of the network--whether you hook up 4 computers to your router's 4 ports or 4 computers to a hub to one router port--is irrelevant.

DNS translates domain names to IP addresses. NAT is used to share one IP address among multiple computers. DHCP is used to auto-receive an IP address.

What might be confusing you is that many DSL and cable modems don't have integrated routers, so your computer is given a public IP address. In that case, you can't share the connection with a hub unless your ISP gives you multiple IP addresses.

Hooking up another router to his existing one would be a waste of money and just cause even more problems. A hub or switch should be used to connect a router to more computers than it physically supports.

His network is setup correctly. The problem is simply what other people have already said: the router isn't configured correctly to allow game playing.

Whatever you want to call it, I was stil basically right. Either way, my methodology works. But hey, you're the one that wasted 30 minutes on something I'll never read.

Sure, if by "basically right" you mean "completely wrong on every point". "Use a router instead of a hub" is a monumentally stupid suggestion.

I just figured that an explanation would be a bit nicer than saying, "This guy is a moron, don't listen to his idiotic suggestions." You know, since it is possible to correct someone or be corrected without being a jackass about it.

That port forwarding page says that if you try to forward the same application to two different ip addresses there may be problems. In this case there are probably two machines [including mine] on the network which would desire to be able to play games, is there a good way to do that?

I can't answer that problem, Dor, but for Battlenet, make sure your Router is upgraded to the latest firmware. I couldn't get starcraft to run for sooo long, but all we had to do was upgrade the firmware and Battlenet was all "omfg leik ur in, f00l!"

IIRC to have multiple computers connect to ie Battle.net you have to set them up to use different ports and then accordingly configure your router.
AFAIK you could do that with StarCraft in some registry settings. Not sure about other games, though.
