I have a legit XP Pro key, but no disk.

Just like it says on the tin, I have a legit key for XP pro, but I don't have the disk for it (I peeled the sticker off of a garbaged computer.). Does MS have a service for replacing disks (That's free of course) or do I have to get it through.. alternate methods?
2009-10-12, 5:21 PM #2
I'd be very dubious of 'alternate methods', an awful lot of those methods come with trojans to build botnets. I'd go so far as to say never use a pirated OS, even if you have a legit key and all is (dubiously) legal and moral, just because the trojans that may come with it can be incredibly hard to detect and impossible to remove.

I know, but I have my places. Also have a Vista Premium. If anyones dubious of where I got these it's simple- threw out some useless computers after scrapping them, and kept the key stickers.

I think a download uncracked image of XP would only be a violation of the DMCA, not copyright infringement, and it wouldn't even be that if the XP disk has no copy protection.

As long as you've ponied up the cash, you've pretty much fulfilled your ethical obligation.

Yeah I know, It's not so much about the ethics as it the fact that I want to have a legit disk to go with my legit key.

Just torrent a cdkey streamed version of your windows. Its the same as having an oem disc essentially, but it requires a legit cd key still.

It will be a legit disk if you get an uncracked version.

Yeah, Im pretty sure the company that made this is dead now so that won't work greenboy, thanks for the info though. I got myself an untouched disk (Or atleast as far as I can tell) from a place.
E: FFFFFF IT WAS A HOME EDITION FFFFF
It's so hard to find an untouched copy, this is insane.

If you purchased your software from a system builder who is no longer in business, click the link for your region in the following list:

PM sent.
2009-10-12, 8:35 PM #12
Thanks again greenboy, but it looks they want to charge me for it so screw that.

If you're doing this because you want a legal copy..wasn't the OEM key tied to that specific system, and as such no longer valid if said system is gone?
woot!
2009-10-12, 8:40 PM #14
Oh, good point. I guess I'll find out later.
E: Oh it turns out I do still have it, It's that emulator machine I talked about a couple times here.

Just borrow a friend's CD and make a copy. Or download one off the internet, unless you're bad at finding good, malware-free torrents.

[Edit: Yeah what JLee said too.]
