I remember some GeoCities websites. Mostly JK sites similar to the XKCD home page.

Part of the internet has died today.
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

I remember hosting my ****ty websites of Geocities back in the day... :(

RIP

This is what it would have felt like if we had killed the birds instead of giving them to my Grandfather. Sure we didn't want those stinky, dirty, loud things in our house anymore but... kill em?

Hmm... I dont think I ever had a GeoCities website. If I recall correctly, my first website was hosted on dencity.com. (A quick check shows that dencity no longer exists)
2009-10-25, 11:54 PM #7
i stopped using geocities when they took ftp access away from free accounts

last week i had to help my mom move her website off of geocities

and no i won't be posting any links because it maintains that average geocities site look and it's embarassing

Yeah, i noticed that awhile ago. Went on and copied all the stuff I had from my old account a few weeks ago. Had some screenshots and pictures that I didn't want to lose.

All i can say is... Good Riddance.

Yeah no it's more like having your appendix removed. Something useless that should not be of use in a healthy human being.

The only thing geocities ever gave me was sore eyes.

:( I can't save my stuff from there cause it's blocked on the ship. I saw about that. Does anyone have my gangsta pic?

someone go salvage it:

(i think that link is correct)

heh, i remember those sorts of websites. though most sites that I visited were reasonably well designed (though a few of them had the problem where everything was in some kind of mess up frame where no matter what link you clicked on, your browser was still at the same URL (even external links).

Wow, geocities was the first place I ever registered for on the internet, back when I was but a wee teenager with a crappy JK clan website named "Uber Empire" made in Microsoft Publisher.

Wow I suddenly feel old.

Frames! Frames within frames! Animated starfield backgrounds! Spinning e-mail GIFs! Guest books! Visitor counters! Embedded MIDIs! Comic Sans, Comic Sans, and more Comic Sans! "Under Construction" signs!

All these moments will be lost in time, like tears... in rain.

Damn I thought it had already shut down! I should probably try to go save all my old files saved there...
2009-10-26, 7:37 AM #17
I think I had an Angelfire account at one point.

Anyhow, good riddance

Guys, I don't think it's shutting DOWN, just not accepting new accounts.

no... it's shutting down and all free accounts will be deleted

today is the last day to back up your content or start paying

this is what you see if you login to a geocities account

Quote:
GeoCities is closing on October 26, 2009.

On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.

If you'd like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you've posted online, please act now by downloading your files or upgrading to Yahoo! Web Hosting. See details in the help center or upgrade to Web Hosting now for only $4.99 a month.

also the $4.99 a month is only for the first year ($9.99 a month after) and you have to pay for the whole year at once with no monthly option

IMO nobody should be allowed to say something is $x/month if there is no monthly payment option

I don't see a time, just a date. What time will the sites be unavailable? Midnight?

Kudos to Homestead then! I didn't know it was still around. I guess I never heard of it going under either so...

Thank god. Now all those horrible websites I made when I was younger will finally disappear! (Never going to forget my passwords again!)

If you want to see a bad jedi knight site in the next 6 or so hours:

http://www.geocities.com/bognorridge/

Did I mention it has midi's, frames, java applets (no flame-things, damn!), 17-year old prose and embedded wav files?
