Hmm fresh interesting TV, quick kill it! (Firefly mourning)

For the last year or two most everyone in the Cantina has been talking about a show by Joss Whedon called Firefly which was axed midway through it's first season. A combination scif-fi/western show it sounded interesting to me but I have to admit after the last few decidedly lacklustre seasons of Buffy I was a bit wary of getting too enthusiastic about it.... especially since it was canned.

It never ended up showing on Australian TV or if it did it must have been somewhere north of midnight and I missed it. I kept my eyes out for it on DVD but only ever saw it available on Region 1 online and though my DVD player has been 'region unlocked' I didn't feel like paying international S&H for a cancelled tv show. Anyway, fast forward to a few weeks ago when my wife spotted the region 4 version of the Firefly DVD boxset in a local department store for a reasonable price, so we grabbed it.

Wow, they actually cancelled this? The hell?! That's basically what was running through my head as I watched all 14 episodes. I loved it, simply a terrifically executed concept with interesting characters, excellent witty writing and impressive production values. Very fresh and dynamic, much like Buffy was back in the day before the angst cloud set in. I found myself getting more and more depressed with each episode…part of me hoping it would start sucking so I could somehow understand why it never took off. That never happened…and indeed the final episode, Objects in Space, was likely the best. This show was going place dammit, what happened??

Then I watched the special features...... could 20th Century Fox have possibly ****ed up any bigger? They started airing the show on tv in the U.S. from The Train Job (which was supposed to be the 2nd episode)....what?......WHAT???....HOW ****ING MORONIC CAN YOU GET???? Don't get me wrong I greatly enjoyed that ep (hahaha engine kick), but the double episode pilot is where the characters, the story and indeed the universe is defined! How on earth is a series supposed to succeed if you chop its ****ing head off and pitifully roll it out much later, out of order?? At that point I went from depressed to really really angry, as you can see. There is so much garbage on TV these days and what happens when something new and fresh comes along? Fox does it’s best to kill it from day one. They completely messed up the viewing order no doubt making the story very disjointed and never even aired three of the episodes, even though all three were very well done…..’Trash’ in particular was wildly entertaining.

Now I fully realise that the skyrocketing DVD sales (since when shown in freaking order it’s impossible to ignore the quality) prompted Universal to buy the rights off Fox and commission a feature length movie for cinemas (Serenity, out April 22, 2005) and if it succeeds the cast is signed on for two more movies…. but as pleased as I am about the movie(s), I’d have much preferred an ongoing TV series. Sigh.

Anyway, to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet (especially you other aussies) and enjoy interesting well written sci-fi, check it out….and to anyone who gave up on it because of Fox’s best attempts to kill it off, you might want to give it a second look too....and yes I know this post is coming 18 months after it was canned but I can't help it if they never aired it here [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I dearly love firefly, and fox sucks for killing it. That is all.

Not showing the pilot first was one of the problems. The other was the show being on a ****ty time slot (Friday nights or soemthing like that). It's a shame Sci-Fi didn't pick it up. That'd have been awesome.

I used to lurk over at the Buffy.com.au forums and pretty much everyone there who had seen Firefly couldn't fault it and couldn't believe it was axed. I've been looking around for the DVD boxed set for a while and haven't had much luck. Where did you get it and how much?

Target for around $50. Worth every cent. Haven't seen it anywhere else though.....well, except on some online australian DVD stores now (if you've got a credit card).

Tv has been reduced to nothing. most shows are utter dreck, and even fox kn ows it, but they are too busy selling out on the reality tv bandwagon to care about it.

Reality TV was cool 4 years ago, but now, the ideas are pretty much tapped out. Now I prefer reruns of old sitcoms to reality shows.

i hardly ever watch tv anymore b/c of it.

Reality TV is just getting so insanely bizarre its not funny. Some of the new ones starting up in Australia post-Olympics are staggeringly obnoxious.

The worst I've seen so far, is "Wifeswap" or "Who Wants to Marry My Dad".

Regarding "Who Wants to Marry My Dad", it breaks everything that is sacred in marriage. It's sickening, and disgraces the human race.

"Wifeswap" is just terrible. I mean, terrible. Take you away from your family and place you with some other family. If you need help, go to a therapist!!

Surprise Wedding is one that jumps to mind. I find ambushing a guy like that and putting him in a really awkward spot is disgusting.

The Australian version of that is what I referring to in my post, it's just....no. There is also a show coming here that's like the Bachelorette, but half the guys in it are gay and they just aren't telling the girl which.....when I heard the premise I honestly felt like crying, wtf is wrong with our society right now??

Firefly is absolutely great. How many shows has Fox killed by putting them on in the Friday night slot of death?

Damn you aussies are backward... we had that same show (or something very similar) aired here about a year and a half ago. I didn't even bother to watch even one episode.

Also, here's some cool Firefly links for everyone to look at...

Firstly, http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=54 , a Firefly personality test ....I am Jayne and I am happy about it.

Secondly, http://fireflychinese.home.att.net/ , this site explains all the chinese used in the series. My favourite is Tai-kong suo-yo duh shing-chiou sai-jin wuh duh pee-goo.... or "All the planets in space flushed into my butt" (Wash, to Zoe about not caring what Mal thinks).

The only 'reality TV' programme I remotely enjoyed was some "hidden quiz" thing, where some guy went around and asked random people questions and if they got it right he gave them money. It wasn't making fun of people, other than showing their bemused faces when they got some money shoved in their hand.
They had one segment where they take one random person and tell them about the programme, and they have to find some other random person and ask them the questions and the more they got right the more money both of them got. That was quite good.

Should that really come as any surprise?

Honestly, I always pictured you as more of a Simon kind of guy. Prim, proper, possibly gay.
