Massassi Holiday Logo Contest 2009
2009-10-26, 8:44 AM #1
I've decided to kick this into gear a little early this year in order to give people more chances to make logos and to give them more time in the sun.

Starting November 1st I will be putting the rotation up, so between now and then, I'm looking for people who wish to be placed in the rotation from the very beginning.

To submit a logo for the contest, just follow this simple set of guidelines:

  1. The logo's dimensions must be 384x154 (the size of our current logo)
  2. The logo must be compressed decently in JPG, GIF, or PNG format.
  3. The logo must not be animated.
  4. The logo must contain "Massassi Temple" in some form.
  5. Quality over quantity! Your name will be displayed under it so do your best!
  6. It must be festive, tying in with one of the many holidays in December!
  7. Star Wars themes get bonus points!

You must email the logos to webmaster@sorrowind.net or post them here. IF you email them, please give me your forum username so that I may properly credit you!

Once again, this is a contest, so a public vote will be held immediately after Christmas to determine the winner. The one with the best logo will be given the opportunity to choose an avatar of their choice for the year.

Does this mean Baconfish loses his HYPNOTOAD after this year's winner is decided, or is it a life gift?

If you start the rotation on November first I'm coming to Cincinatti and I'm going to cut off your creepy disfigured leg.

ITS NOT EVEN ****ING HALLOWEEN YET.
nope.

Halloween is October 31st. How is this an issue, and why do you even care? Most of the time we start so freakin' late anyway, and people whine and moan about not having enough time.

Baconfish is trying to upset the system! He wants to keep his Hypnotoad as long as possible. Take away his avatar for treason!

Complaining about the "holiday season" starting too early is what complaining about airplane food used to be 15 years ago.

In short: BACONFISH HATES FUN.

It's more the fact that suddenly theres shops stocking christmas stuff and effing christmas based ads starting to pop up on tv and theres 2 months until then. That's a pretty hefty chunk of a year and it pisses me off. Hell, it's not even Winter yet.

And I'm not too fussed about losing Hypnotoad, he's had his run and then some. :P
nope.

It's not even winter until 4 days before Christmas...

You wouldn't lose Hypnotoad until the end of the contest anyway :P

Exactly.

ITS TOO SOON FOR CHRISTMAS ADS.
nope.

It doesn't count if I get sabotaged.

I fulfilled my obligation to many of them anyway, despite those who attempted to thwart me.

I remember this came up before. CM felt that, with the old ones in rotation, people wouldn't get to see the new ones very often. It's a bad excuse though because:

1) It can't be that hard to just give "more weight" to the new ones. Hell, I've done this sort of thing in Flash and I'm probably the worst "programmer" ever.

2) With just the new ones up, it gets VERY repetitive. Even if we got a slew of entries on par with the best of previous years, 20-ish entries would still get old after a while, especially for us who check the forums as if our lives depended on it.

3) And, of course, not having the old ones in rotation is a bit of a bummer to the people who put the effort into making banners in the past. They shouldn't be relegated to "archive" status.

So, best-friend CM, please see if you can place the old holiday banners in rotation too. I would love you forever and ever if you did. :D

*gebs it*

EDIT: Oh yes, oh woe is poor Steven. *pats Steven on the head*

*gebs it again*

Stupidly simple weighting method:

Code:
r = rand()
if r > 0.75
    show new
else
    show old

Not implementing that is just laziness.

Yeah, if only the weighting was the "hard" part. The old logos use an entirely different organizational system on the filesystem and uses a database. To compare, the old holiday logo system runs on a thousand of lines of code in about 20 files, the new one runs on about 178, including the CSS.

It can be done, and it still wouldn't be that hard, I just don't care to. The old system only rotated current logos of that year as well.

You only had yourself to blame there. I offered to give you the list, you didn't take me up on the offer. I wasn't about to unban you for it.

Oh man you could at least put the Max Headroom one up as well

And I sort of remember seeing past years' logos last year... or something. Hum!

Yep. I understand what Brian was going for, I just don't think it made sense for something so simple.

He had a full database and administration system, with the ability to add authors, and it kept track of images throughout. It would regenerate a static index file with each new image, and every year that static file would be moved into a folder.

I could understand somewhat because he also kept track of emails of the artists, but I saw absolutely no reason to do that, since most people's emails back in 1999 are invalid today :colbert:

So I rewrote the holiday system so that it reads author names right off the images, a bit of extra handling for multiple images from the same person, and have it automatically handle all years off of one script. I just checked and the actual code, just PHP, only weighs in at about 50 lines counting comments and spacing newlines, lawl. All I have to do is rename people's images, and upload. Much easier :/

If I feel arsed I'll either pull out the old images and add them to mine, rendering the old system obsolete, or somehow tie into his database, although I'd prefer to keep it simple.

I am disappointed that you don't care to do so, but it's not like there's anything I can do about it. However, I can say that the old system DID rotate all the logos that had been sumbitted over the years because I, with no life, distinctly remember refreshing the page just so I could see the ISB-related logos such as Janitor Bob's spooky taco one. There was even a logo that said "your f5 button will hate you" -- a logo that wouldn't make sense if the logos only rotated for that year.
