or the more recent variant, E74, on their 360?

My Elite got the E74 late last week and it's not even 2 years old :suicide:. Started getting strangely colored pixelated lines in games and artifacting in the dashboard wherever there was 3d graphics, but all 2d graphics were fine. Finally gave the E74 screen last friday. At least Microsoft extended their RRoD warranty to the E74 too.

Right after I buy Fable 2 and ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 too.:gonk:

Not yet. Bought mine in latter 2008.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I did. Early 2007 variant. Never did send it in for repairs.

I've had 2 Elites and so far no RRoD. But my CD drive went out once. It really doesn't bother me with the 3 year warranty.

My Friend has had 2 PS3's and both bluray players went out. No warranty and they want $150 to fix it.

Kinda worrisome. My gameboys (pocket, color, advance) still work in perfect condition after all these years. My NES still does to a certain extent. N64 does. Gamecube still in good shape, so is the PS2 (not the first models though). But I can't say my 360, with confidence, is going to make it past 5 years later. Maybe it will, if I'm lucky.

I know the 360 has more parts, is much more advanced and such but... ehh..

My Pro from 2006 red ringed about 2 weeks before it's 3 year warranty was up. I got lucky there. The replacement they sent me has a very loud optical drive though :( .

I've had two RRoD's on my XBox. I got it the summer of '06. The first one I got was in the fall of '07 and the second was not that winter but the next one.

I had one that Red Ringed. Sent it in and got it fixed privately on Ebay. Red ringed 6 months later and decided to buy a new one. Been fine since then

I did. I shipped it out and they replaced it with a brand new one. No problems with it it yet.

2009-10-28, 2:38 PM #15
I had one after having had it two years (ish). They sent me a new one just in time for Christmas last year and it came with the nice new DVD drive that doesn't sound like a NUCLEAR BOMB.

Well that's not fair. The gameboy was incredibly simple and all solid state. So was the gamegear and NES. The N64 only slightly less so. All of these only loaded games. The 360 is a ton more complicated, running an entire OS with many features instead of simply loading games.

Then maybe it should just simply load games.

nope.

I remember the NES being chock full of tech issues...they would often refuse to load games unless you blew the dust out (after which it seemed to be a matter of fortune), and even then they would start to malfunction when used over some years. Maybe the PAL version was just less durable?

I did. First run system, got it release day. Successfully repaired, no issues since.

Get a qtip or paper towel and (carefully) clean the contacts in the system, and your cartridges, with rubbing alcohol. The problem is caused by nothing more than dirt.

Now, if you have the problem where games refuse to stay locked in, the simplest solution is to use something to hold them down. Seriously.

I had a first generation and it lasted about 2 years before redringing.

Oh, gripe about Xbox here:

Got xbox off ebay. Seller had some DLC (Hao 3 maps)

I bought it, deleted their account since it had a really gay name. I purchased Mythic maps, which require you to have paid for and downloaded prerequisite maps the seller had done.

My xbox dies.

I start using my HD on my roomates xbox.

I CANT USE THE MAPS PAID FOR BY THE SELLER.

Ok ... I get it. That's understandable. Copyright / legal BS.

But DON'T LET ME PLAY the MYTHIC MAPS I PAID for, that YOU CAN'T USE WITHOUT the legendary maps. I can't even view the awesome video clips I've made on those maps. The maps are still downloaded on my HD. They've been paid for.

Easy fix for it, the same way I was able to transfer the rights of my mythic to this new xbox. But ... the account has been deleted from my HD .. so I can't do anything about it. And oh yea, the reasons the xbox was being sold on ebay way to pay for a dying persons surgery. Yea, I'm gonna email them after a year and be like "lol I can't play the $5 map pack, will you please help me out even though your mom could be dead."

But yea, RRoD must suck too.

Yeah, I suppose mine technically RRed twice, but they were just hours apart. I used the 'coffin' to ship my extra 360 I bought used to replace mine while MS repaired it when I sold it on Ebay, so I could help with my mother's surgery.

No RRoD for me. I've had my 360 for just over a year now.

I got a 360 Pro for Christmas in 2007 and it hasn't had the RRoD. One time I had been gone most of the day and I came home and it had the RRoD but I unplugged it from the power block and plugged it back in and it's worked fine since then.
2009-10-28, 10:00 PM #28
I have a used 360 pro purchased in Christmas 2007. No problems so far.

I got the E74 after Microsoft offered the longer warranty for RRoDs, but before they extended the longer warranty to E74 errors.

That's a common misconception. Dirt on the cartridge is hardly ever the real problem. Also, I think blowing in the thing is no more useful than repeatedly inserting it and removing it.

The NES uses a ZIF socket, which had two problems: Repeated insertion and removal caused the pins in the socket to bend (exacerbated by things like the Game Genie sticking out the front), and that the pins in the socket weren't gold plated and were highly susceptible to corrosion. The newer NES model has a top-down slot like the SNES, and has no issues.

Then there's the issues with the authentication chip, which causes the power light blinking problem. It's really fickle with timing at boot, and the above problems just make it worse. Seems it was removed in the newer version.

actually it has it's own set of issues... specifically with video output

I got an Elite in 2006 and it RRoD'd on me in 2008. It had to be shipped to Germany, but came back in about 10 days. Had no problems with it since.

Get a Pro at the tail end of 2006. RRoD'd in April 2008. Shipped it out (free), got it back 6 days later. No problems since. They gave me a brand new unit. It still had the protective plastic over the "chrome" and didn't have the big black scuff mark from where I slid the rubber foot of my DVD player across the top.

I bought a used 360 earlier this year (around March?) which was advertised as having been previously repaired for a hardware fault. No problems with it at all. Although when I was back home a few months ago I used my brother's 360 and had a worrying moment when red lights started spinning, but they went away after turning the console off (and leaving it for a minute wondering how to tell him).
2009-10-29, 12:52 PM #36
Sent mine in a few months back. At least I can say getting it back in 2 days was nice. (the repair center is only about an hour away from where I live)

1.) The 360 and the PS3 both have the same amount of RAM, but the configuration in the Xbox 360 is more practical for game development. The PS3 was released a year later.
It's fine.

2.) The cheap heat sink isn't the real reason 360s fail. It's actually caused by faulty connections and cheap plastic supports, although the cheap heat sink is the instigator.
