Since some of you only seem to get your news from here. It is still breaking at this point.

Do you really have to turn every issue into a partisan debate?

I think Emon misunderstood Wookie's comment to mean that some people only get their news from fox news, when he actually meant that some people only get their news from the massassi forums.

well she lives on base and its less than a mile from where she lives. the shooting is actually in the offices where her husband works when hes not deployed. luckily he just went back on deployment a few weeks ago.

Geesh, never thought I'd hear someone say they were lucky to be deployed.
2009-11-05, 2:01 PM #14
There was just a press conference. It happened at a Soldier Readiness Facility. Typically that area is used to process soldiers both prior to and upon return from deployment. It is not an area where soldiers would normally be immediately processing for such but where medical, personnel, dental, financial, etc, records are screened with the soldiers before and after deployments or in the normal process of maintaining records for that purpose.

As of now there are 12 dead, 31 injured. A shooter has been killed. Two suspects in custody. Shooter and suspects are military.

Heh. I never thought I'd hear someone say "Luckily my Husband is in Iraq right now."
But that's what my best friends wife just said about him.

(He's stationed there when not in Iraq)

Sad.

It appears that the shooter was an Army major set to deploy. He was a convert to islam and was upset with the prospect. Still developing, of course.

*sigh* Today has sucked for me. For the last hour I've been trying to get in touch with my sister. Finally just heard back from her. I've been super stressed out.

Of course, the fact that he's Muslim is going to make this a huge story.

Of course, the fact that he's Muslim is what caused this to be a story.

No, a guy running around shooting random, innocent people will make this story huge.. People will just blame it on him being Muslim which could be true or not.

llibja, thanks. I don't know how I would have handled it, to lose another sister after what happened last month.

Mort-Hog, 1) it is/will be a huge story anyway. 12 people are dead (but I think that includes the gunman?) and 31 injured on an Army base. 2) him being Muslim was almost certainly a motivating factor in his actions.

I can't see where it says that he's a Muslim on any reputable news source, and frankly I don't see why it matters.

The only thing I can see being confirmed is that he was a licensed Psychiatrist - MAYBE HE HAD FATHER ISSUES. I'd use the gun emote here if it wouldn't be in bad taste.
nope.

Even if you didn't see anywhere that mentions his religion, his name could be a big hint. Unless you haven't seen that either. Alone, being a muslim doesn't have to mean anything but considering that it has been a factor in at least one somewhat similar event pretending it doesn't matter is premature.

I did see his name but that doesn't mean anything; it just shows he's most likely of a certain descent. I mean my name is Shaun, but that doesn't make me Irish. :P
nope.

I'm not going to jump to conclusions on the religion issue.

It's really unfortunate when this sort of thing happens. It's sad that these brave people are constantly in danger when deployed, and for something like this to happen where they're supposed to be safe is just terrible. I'm glad Sarn's sister is ok.

I just heard about this... really, really horrible.
2009-11-05, 5:03 PM #30
I don't think it's worth speculating on this guy's motive until we hear more about it. The arseholes who commit these atrocities tend to leave behind notes in excruciatingly boring detail about how they justify to themselves randomly killing innocent people.

so far from what i have heard he IS muslim, though not a convert, has been his whole life. from interviews with other "military personnel" he has made a number of comments about how muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan should rise up and fight against the aggressors.

honestly at first things looked like he just snapped from stress of being a military psychiatrist and possibly having to deal on a daily basis with soldiers coming back from combat and also severe stress over not wanting to be deployed. but, unfortunately it does look like his religion probably played a role as well.

I had heard he was a recent convert, but I just read on Wikipedia that his parents were Jordanian immigrants.

Latest report says the shooter wasn't killed; multiple gunshot wounds, but is in stable condition.

Oh man, I already knew about this but it's scary to think of how close a massassian was to this.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a damn tragedy wether I know someone involved or not of course. It's just that that sent a chill down my spine.

They claimed its impossible for anyone to make fun of a major, even if he is muslim

I dont believe it, they are obviously just saying that just because of how bad it would make them look

im not saying it happened, im just saying its not impossible
2009-11-07, 7:33 PM #37
So he got made fun of. So he wanted out of the army. BIG FREAKIN DEAL. I guarantee every single person in the US military has been made fun of for their beliefs, and at least half of them want to get out. You don't see the rest of us going on rampages and killing people.

I am SICK of hearing about how the shooter was a vicitim because they wouldn't let him out of the army after he got made fun of for being Muslim.

Sarn, I don't think he wanted out because he was made fun of. Most people have something someone makes fun of them for. Military or not. You can make jokes at people not in the service.

As I am reading the situation, his morals were compromised, he wanted out, was not allowed to do so, so he dealt with the situation with anger..and I can understand that.

That being said, I'm glad he is still alive. I hope he is tortured to death. But yea... All evidence I've seen so far seems like this guy had issues. I don't know if anything I've read is true or not, but I'm interpreting the evidence I've seen, in my opinion.

I feel no sympathy towards the shooter. I'm sure most of the friction he experienced was due to his extremist views that it appears he was fairly vocal about. 9/11 was over 8 years ago and the war in Iraq over 6 years. He had any number of opportunities to leave the service in the time since then if he felt his values were compromised but, no. He stayed in, accepted an education provided by the tax payers and then turned on the same people he was supposed to help as a medical professional. This is a truly despicable person.

MUSLIM = TERRIST OMG!!!!111
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.
