It's gotta be a joke.

Even if it's real, if people start doing this phone companies will charge them for it. And will likely charge much more than the power companies do (simply because they don't want to be in the service of providing power).

Last time I was in LA, I had to walk down eight flights of stairs with two big bags to check out of the hotel that had been without power twice during my stay. The vibrator would have really helped my muscles after that stressful hotel stay!

Why wouldn't they be? Electricity is electricity.

You can find a tutorial on how to make a lamp that uses the phone line on instructables.com.

It's a neat idea, but not very practical since a phone line only carries around 50 volts at any given time and if you want to make something to run off of it you'll have to make a custom power supply for each device. Not to mention that your phone company might be able tell if you have an excess amount of energy being drawn on the line (to power a light, for example). That could be considered utility theft.

And since the Phone Company is evil, they will throw the book at you.

It could be useful in emergency situations, I suppose.
