Dos/Win95 era games.
2009-11-10, 4:05 PM #1
I just came in possession of a used, old, moldy, win95 based computer.
Pentium 2 233 with a 4 meg AGP card. By all means it should be dead, but it soldiers on.
Does anyone have any recommendations for what I should play on it? I'm having a lot of enjoyment playing Dark Forces at the moment, but I know there are more games from before my time.

Something to be said about playing the classics on a true classic.

Well, I upgraded it to 98 on account of no USB drivers on win95, atleast not for this joystick.
So if that changes anything...

Because:
A: I can't find a VM that can really do 98/95 and have good AGP support.
B: It's a fun project with spare parts
C: Something to be said about using a true classic system to play classic games, you don't play NES on an HDTV do you?
2009-11-10, 6:15 PM #19
I play my SNES on an HDTV... its ballin'.

Better break out a CRT then, playing on an LCD won't be 'legit'

i used to play NES on an old 13" TV with a woodgrain finish on the plastic and a damn knob for the channels... it also had the 2 screws to connect an antenna

that's the proper way to do it

but my old school TV died and i haven't been to goodwill lately to look for a replacement

Win95 USB support is disabled by default, read this: http://www.usbman.com/Win95%20USB%20Guide.htm

Quote:
NOTE: Installing USBUPD2.exe before installing USBSUPP.exe will cause the system lock and will prevent booting to Safe Mode. A complete reinstall of Windows will be necessary.

Ahh the good old days! :awesome:

Anyways hopefully Windows 95 will then load up a generic joystick driver for your joystick.

I'd recommend installing Windows 98 on it though, or Windows 2000 if it can run it (though supposedly there are compatibility concerns). Windows XP would be a bit too much for it, unless you nLited it or used a minimalistic custom build like TinyXP or MicroXP (again, compatibility concerns since so much stuff is ripped out).

As for games, check for release dates. Anything before 2000 or 2001 has an excellent chance of being explicitly compatible with Windows 95.

You will find DOS games to be difficult to get running especially since Windows 95 is decidedly not DOS. Best to just use DOSBox on a modern machine, or a dedicated MS-DOS VM. "Reboot to MS-DOS" is NOT the same thing since the version of MS-DOS is 7.0 which introduces some big changes (long file names being one of them) over 6.22 and isn't really meant to be a stand-alone DOS but have Windows running on top of it. Though "Reboot to MS-DOS" may have better luck than running some DOS games inside of Windows.

So umm... Yoda Stories, Indiana Jones' Desktop Adventures... Descent II... Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine... JK/MotS... those are the games I remember playing in the Win9x era.

Oh there's a cool racing game called POD too.

LCD is to a CRT what an HDTV is to older TVs.
E: Tried those, win95 is still hooped untill I can find a gameport joystick.

Or homeworld...
This is better then getting a new computer I swear.

Oh I missed Homeworld in my skimming through to make sure nobody had said Carmageddon.

Homeworld is TOTALLY AWESOME. I tried to get it running in VMWare Fusion a few weeks ago but had no real luck. I might try again now I've got V3 up and running though. Also tried Theme Hospital but to no avail :(

TOONSTRUCK.

If you have old tech, you can probably get this working. I could never get this running on my new computers, even through DOSBox
