A quick math question for you.

Very simple, not a trick question.

A golf club and a golf ball cost $1.10 total. The golf club costs one dollar more than the golf ball. How much money does the golf ball cost?

It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

indeed
2009-11-12, 6:08 PM #5

A+B = 1.10
A = B+1
=> B + B + 1 = 1.10
2B = 0.10
B = 0.05

2009-11-12, 6:55 PM #10
I'll give this one to my 7 year old nephew and see if he can figure it out. I know anyone with even prealgebra experience could.

Well yeah. That's the point.

$1.05 and $0.05

It's simultaneous equations for me. If I didn't suspect it was a trick question I'd have probably not gone to that effort though.

i used matlab

I just reinstalled Matlab on my XP VM. It's like returning to an old flame who stabbed you in the back. :ninja:

(actually, I just thought I'd see if I could get any use out of it at work. I doubt it though)

No, you like algebra.

Analysis is math but nobody likes analysis.

allow me to reformulate:

no person likes analysis

and then by denying the antecedent, anybody who likes analysis is not a person

Algebra isn't math? :(

Congratulations on selecting the correct choice people (for those that did). If you want a certificate, I'll mail you one.

I'll bet my account for a week that you were just planning on using a generator. If you send actual certificates that you made with your signature, then let me be banned for a week.

how about this for good taste

you have 13 golf clubs. each golf clubs cost is a multiple of 13.00, and no two clubs have the same cost. you have an amount of gold balls equal to the sum of the cost of the golf clubs divided by 13. the cost of each golf ball is 0.13+0.13*number of purchased golf balls (first one costs 0.13, second costs 0.26, so on and so forth). If you spent 1368.38$, how many golf balls did you buy?
