Among many other, and more important reasons, just how happy do you think I am to be home?

My internet speed is currently 6 megabits per second but you'll have to take my word on it because I'm not going to turn off my torrents so I can test it :P

Apparantly that was the closest test site to Baghdad. Of course it was satelite, going to where ever and then back to Kuwait, via satelite, I'm sure.

Yes and yes.

I can't even run the test. don't have a recent version of flash. But the results would be depressing anyway.

I hate(re: jealous of) you.

Why is it that upload is more? I've never seen that before.

Do they use particle accelerators to upload data?

My guess would be that it is related to the fact that CERN is classed as "Tier 0", ie the source of all the LHC data. It has to push all the data out to the other sites around the world, (Tier 1's, places like RAL-UK, Fermilab-US, SLAC-US, DESY-DE) from which the countries users are meant to access their data.

It's then up to the Tier 1's to spread that data around again to the Tier 2's, which mostly consist of universities.

I was under the impression that the Tier 0 bandwidth (and other Tier's) was seperate from "normal" traffic but it would seem there is some noticable effect. CERN has never been a particular place where data has been downloaded too, it is always the source of data and it would kind of be logical to have a higher outgoing than incoming connection because of that.

Too bad it pings out for 5 seconds every 30 seconds. Also comcast caps me at 1.5mb/s, so I'm paying for roughly 1/16 the speed I'm getting

Could having 30+ Firefox tabs open bring the download speed down?
2009-11-13, 10:05 PM #23
3.0mbit/s down (though I've only see it run at 2.5 max), 256kbit/s up.

Much much faster than I thought it would be. I'm at my parents house though and maybe they have upgraded internet. At my personal house I only get 7mb down

Only if they are actively downloading something.

Am I the only one that actively translates "Mb" into "JK"?
Ever since 1999 I have constantly valued things by how many JK installs it could fit/download in a second.

Yeah, that's a little asymmetric.

Also I don't know why it thinks I'm in Manchester, or something, because I'm not.

I'm not in the slightest.
