IDE slave in Windows 7
2009-11-18, 8:48 PM #1
My dad just recently upgraded his computer from XP professional to Windows 7 HP. He's got an IDE setup with a master and slave hard drive, but Win7 isn't recognizing the slave. Won't show up in his My Computer or anything. I've been searching in google but haven't come up with anything so far. Anyone heard of this problem?

Right click "My Computer"- Manage-Disk Management.
All secondary drives need to be added through that, SATA or IDE.

As NoESC pointed out, make sure it shows up in Disk Management. You probably need to format the drive and assign it a drive letter.

If it doesn't show in Disk Management, make sure the jumpers on the drives are configured properly, and that the BIOS is configured as well.

It does show up in disk management. Just isn't showing up in when he opens my computer.

Edit: Had him assign it a letter in disk management and he says its coming up and he can access it fine. Thanks for the help guys!

Yup. Disk Management.

Protip: You can mount drive letters on the command line or in a batch file with the mountvol command. Once Windows decided it knew better than me what drive letters to assign and I had to fix them all by hand every time Windows booted. It took several minutes since you have to wait for Drive Management to do nothing for a while between each change. Once I found mountvol I made a batch file to run on startup and it takes a few seconds tops.

If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Along the same lines, I use the subst command in a batch file on startup to create a C drive for some stubborn programs that hard code paths.

I still have two IDE drives in my system. Don't know what the big deal with that is.

Mine does too, but it also has sata.. I don't even think the IDE works anymore, but I wouldn't want to run windows 7 either.

Installed 7 on an old machine to give to a friend. 2.8GHz P4 from 2002 or 2003. 120GB IDE and x800pro. Scored 3.8 in the experience thing, starts chrome in about 2 seconds, plays lots of older games. Still very useful for what most people need.

He says it runs great, other then apparently not liking to boot up when he has his external USB HDD attached during boot up. HDD works fine if he attaches it afterwards, just gives him all sorts of error messages if its attached when he starts his comp.

Go in the BIOS and change the boot order so it doesn't try to boot from USB first and it will stop doing that. :) Happens a lot when people get printers with card readers too.
